I realize he was mad at everyone, but it still seems extreme to create a pit of eternal fire to get revenge.

The pit of eternal fire referred to in the Bible was a burning garbage pit. Not Dante's Pop Art Hell, that Preachers use to keep you locked in fear and pay them money...

picture this, someone raped and murdered your 5 years old daughter and never been caught. don't you want him to stay in hell forever for doing that or did you want from God to reward him with heaven?
