What should I do about files that can't be defragmented?

Can I delete them or move them, and will this help? I am trying to increase the speed of my computer when it is processing things. The hard drive is really full, so I am deleting and moving a lot of files, and today I did a defrag and got a list of files that couldn't be defragmented.

Is there anything else I can do to increase the speed?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Try this article, which talks more about the unmovable files: http://www.google.com/search?q=unmovable+files+def...

To help speed up your system, you can increase your virtual memory (this is done through My Computer --> Properties --> Advanced --> Performance if you are on Windows).

If that's not an option, you can always purchase additional memory and have it added to your computer.

You can also set your computer to optimize itself for programs over aesthetics, also through My Computer's properties.

Also, try limiting how many processes are running at once. Take a look at your startup files and see if programs load on start that you don't use too often, such as QuickTime or eFax, and change your settings so that they only start when you prompt them to.

You might try the program CCleaner (just google it), which cleans out junk files and also checks the registry for errors.

    Try this:

Click Start > Run > type in msconfig > OK

Then go to the Startup tab and carefully read the items there. Uncheck the ones that you don't really need like:

    Messenger

    Quick Time

    Adobe

    Office

Things like that. Don't be too worried because if you check something and change your mind you can always go back and re-check it. Then click Ok and restart.

Also adding RAM can speed things up. Just make sure you get the right RAM or it won't work.
