Why do Christians think they're a persecuted minority? (Please read more)?
I've started a new job and we have two weeks of "team building" which began this week. One of our activities was to form a circle and throw a ball to another person. We announced things like "favorite color" etc. Then the leader had us shout the answer to "what is your favorite thing?" About 1/3 of the circle said "Jesus!" to this question, including everyone in my service group. So I'll spend the year being the only person in my group who's favorite thing isn't Jesus.
My question is, if the situation were reversed, how would you Christians feel? Why don't we Atheists feel the need to shout out our non-belief in situations like this "My favorite thing is NOT believing in god!" And finally, how can you possibly claim any kind of "persecution" when others are constantly made to feel awkward by your persistant pushing of Jesus?

Reminds me in the 2000 election, then-Governor Bush was asked, "Who is your favorite philosopher?" and he responded, "Jesus," to wild applause.

If I'm not mistaken (which I probably am cuz I'm Buddhist and don't know toooo much about christians) I think that part of their faith requires them to be the minority.
Hear me out...
Many Christians believe that only a certain number of people will be truly saved Christians in the end. Also there is a lot of stuff in the Bible that prepares christians that people will reject their ideas.
They are supposed to carry the word of god to those who have not been exposed to it... and everyone has...
I don't think the Bible takes into account that it's reader might be living in an entirely Christian society... oops....
So if no one is objecting - and they are fine to practice as they see fit... it might actually make them a little nervous.
I know it would make me a little uncomfortable, if I was taught that the more people argue with me, the more right I must be... and then nobody even bats an eyelash...
I would feel like I seriously messed up somewhere if that was me.
So maybe they just feel more comfortable in "assuming" that they are persecuted just like the bible said they would be.
In turn, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy for them... just look at this question... it must reek of persecution to a christian.

I think people like that are simply trying to convince themselves. Saying you are really into Jesus is easier than following his commands.
On another note, there are places where Christians do get wedgied. In academia, among the top five colleges, there are about 2% ffaculty that are expressly Christian. The rate of atheism is something like 25%. The numbers are "fuzzy" right now. But despite what might be said about the education or mental defenciencies of Evangelicals, the disproportion is drastic. I happen to teach at a Christian college, which might very well be the only place I could get hired.

It suits their purposes. Keep in mind these people (a "persecuted minority") are the 90%+ of the Christians that make up the population of the United States (they like this when "the US is a Christian nation" stuff comes about).

because deep down inside the, ignorant, Christians ( by that I mean the ones ignorant of their own faith, not all Christians) are so insecure of their religion that they are forever on the defencive. these are usually the ones that follow like sheep and have no real philosophical standpoint! there is a reason why they are referred to as the flock

Most religious groups like to feel that they are persecuted. They wouldn't have it any other way. There is one prominent religion that relishes being persecuted.

Excellent point. My favorite example of the Christian persecution complex is the so-called "War on Christmas," that Bill O' Reilly invents every year.

Maybe that is why they diversify into so many different denominations.
I will have to ask that one.

The overwhelming majority of the world is NOT Christian and......they do persecute Christians in atheistic countries Muslim countries, and even in this country as often as legally possible.
Don't you see if for yourself that you and others DON'T WANT CHRISTIANS AROUND......unless they follow YOUR rules.
