Absolutely! I couldn't agree with you more. Unfortunately, in today's society, "Spell Check" is just a mouse click away for people to use, therefore hindering them for actually knowing how to spell words and understanding the actual definition/meaning as well. The "Nexter" Generation is known for terrible quality communication. They misspell most words and use too many unofficial abbreviations (i.e. "brb", "ttyl", "lol", etc.).

I am in 100% agreement with you. The quality of communication is important. Misspelled words that are basic to the English language drive me crazy.

Glad I am not alone in this i can't stand the spelling mistakes and get really nutz trying to explain the importance of correct spellings. To make matters worst this emails and SMS language really drives me crazy

The mistakes that occur in spelling and grammar are often not picked up by spell checkers. Homonyms such as you mentioned are rarely picked up and simple typos may still spell a real word.

More irritating is the chat room or text abbreviations used when posting a question to the general public. People need to be aware that they need to use a different register when speaking with their friends than when asking strangers questions. I find some of these incomprehensible and I am around a lot of kids!

My pet bugbear is apostrophes. They are used incorrectly all the time - especially the famous 'greengrocers' apostrophe' - e.g. pineapple's and orange's on sale today. It drives me nuts!!

There was a question posted by Yahoo Mike. In it he asked about being grammatically correct, there were people who were angry that they have to spell correctly. It's understandable if you are from another country and english is not your first language. Unfortunately the ones who continue to make mistakes deliberately or otherwise are from english speaking countries. They apparantly don't care if they are coherent or not and get angry if you comment on it.

I agree. Such things are confusing. We all should learn to spell beyond the first grade level and proof-read your writing, also. I often pass up certain questions because the question is written in gibberish. How annoying!
