trying to bulk and trying to lean out are two different things. first off i can't think of any reason to cut out protein in your diet unless you plan on losing muscle which is actually counterproductive to building. Pick one and stick with it, because to build muscle mass, there has to be a considerable amount of calories taken in , most of it from protein.
fyi if you hardcore train you should be eating one g of protein for every pound of bodyweight.

Not even close my man. Yeah you will get stronger but you can forget about putting on any extra muscle. Protein is the building blocks of muscle. You need the protein to build the muscle and the carbs to give you the energy to get you through your vigorous workouts. You need to do some research before you start a lifting plan. The plan is more effective than the exercise itself. Peace out...................

No. You need protein for the proper functioning of your brain and you need protein to build muscle. You also need carbohydrates, what you don't need is the added fat and sugar. To me, my husband is the sexiest thing on two feet, and he eats everything. He had two enormous servings of lasagna yesterday (loaded with cheese and red meat, btw) - and two glasses of Sangria and 3 pieces of garlic bread, and chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and chips and dip. He weighs about 225#, and goes to the gym. He is very muscular, and has changed his workout from going heavy (and I mean heavy!) to fast high reps. with less weight. You can have everything as long as its in moderation. Yesterday was a special occasion, btw. Your body needs fuel, so eat!

You rarely can diet and get in shape at the same time. Your body reacts differently to different training methods. I know, I have been there too.
I would recommend a program designed with specific goals in mind. That way you are not jumping in muscle by muscle and not able to verify the progress. I tried that and it didn't work like I wanted. Nutrition and specific intervals of training all combine to give you the best results.
I used Vince's program to get started.

Here's the thing, you need protein to build muscle. Weight lifting does many things, but it's main thing is to help break down the muscle and you are suppose to help it recover with protein. Whether you want to or not, if you want to deny yourself protein, your denying yourself some nice gains. Besides that you need protein to SURVIVE!
