unfortunately that is the way windows has been progressing - vista gets even worse - it wont even tell you it installed anything, it will just do it and then do a forced reboot even if you are doing something very important and can lose it all at that moment it reboots

Win XP has a much bigger library of native hardware drivers for things like display cards compared to Win98SE. The same thing happens to me when I install XP on the same rig that Win98SE couldn't get around to finding the proper drivers for hardware like the network adaptor, soundcard, and display card. It's really a matter of age for Win98 as a lot of hardware has been released since people upgraded to XP that programmers included drivers for.
Win98SE is still a good OS and you can find pretty much any driver for any device online at sites like DriverGuide.com. Sign up for a free account and you'll have the right driver for your OS in no time.

Windows XP Has drivers for most video cards what come with it
And because windows 98 is a older version of windows, It doesn't have as much drivers as XP as.
But if you know your video card and model number, Write it in google and add "Driver" at the end..
e.g: "nvidia 6700 driver"
You can even use a Driver Finder for all Windows Operating Systems like DriverGuide. www.driverguide.com It's trustable and virus free. I use it all the time.
Good luck and i hope this helps.

XP will load generic video drivers that can be seen in the device manager under "display adaptors" "drivers" , usually, as a microsoft named driver. When 98SE came out your video card wasn't even being made so 98SE has no generic drivers for it.
