Every time I dye my hair, it ends up feeling gunky. What is it and how do I avoid it?

I've been dying my hair for years now, but in the past year, every time I dye it, it's soft and silky for the first day, then after the first wash, it gets a strange almost waxy film over it that makes it look eternally dirty. I've used different brands of dye, different brands of shampoo in various combinations but I always get the film. The only thing that gets rid of it is, amazingly enough, powdered dishwasher detergent, but that has bleach and it strips away the dye. I just want to have bright, healthy hair!

Update:

It's got nothing to do with swimming. It happens in the winter, too.

I've died my hair for years as well. Mine did the same thing. I have fine hair and my hair looked dirty even after I colored it. My resolution was to use a hair stripper once a month and then use a conditioning formula that you can get at a salon. Worst thing to do is change your shampoo and conditionors too often. This causes build up. Find a shampoo and conditioner that you really like (my favorite is Enfusium 23 shampoo and leave in conditioner) and stick to it. Once a month strip it clean with a stripping shampoo and then use a conditioning formula once a month and that should really solve your problem. It has helped me.

after you dye your hair, wash it then put conditioner on and leave it on for about a hour, then wash it off with cold water to give you that extra shine

Could be Chlorine. Do you do a lot of swimming? You have to wash your hair immediately after a swim.
