HELP! Black Widow Spiders . . .?

I have found several black widow spiders in my yard. I have two young children. How can I get rid of the spiders without using any pesticides that may harm my kids? I can keep sweeping away the webs and crushing the spiders, but what if I miss one! Help.

There are more spiders in your yard than you can conceive of. I HATE SPIDERS> A major phobia of mine. Unfortunately, they are here to stay and eat lots of insect we hate....blah....blah....blah. I was told that black widows prefer holly bushes to web in for protection. I know that the way to identify their web, is that the web is a stringy mess, not spiraled like you see in perfect webs. You need to spray around your doors, and of course where you have the most light outside, is where she will feed for insects. I don't recommend leaving shoes near your entry way. And, always turn your shoes upside down and give them a shake that will knock them out and prevent you from putting your foot in and getting bitten. There is absolutely no way of getting rid of all the black widows, I mean one can have thousands of babies. You will just have to be vigilant. No one can relate to hating spiders more than I. But they do save us from mosquitos and other insects. Just keep all the rubbish, dead leaves, etc away from the entrance ways. At least you can readilly identify the black widow, educate your kid about what to look for and how to avoid. It is the one you cannot see that is the most dangerous and that is the brown recluse. They like damp dark, wet cardboard, or old woodpiles and lumber to live in. They are rarely, if ever seen> It will be fine, it is very rare with todays medicine to die from a black widow bite. Good luck.

Get somebody to spray your yard and house. Just keep the kids away for a day or 2! A black widow can kill your kids, pesticides won't!

just a quick note....NO chemical will kill a spider of any kind unless sprayed directly on the spider. A spider walking through where a chemical has been sprayed will not kill it. If you decide to use a chemical, use Tempo SC ultra or Demon Max. You may have to spray 2-3 times to kill all of the spiders. Spray your yard..then wait 3-5 days and spray again.

Spray and let the chemicals DRY..usually 1-day....and it will not harm you kids.

In my opinion...Tempo SC will be the safest as it is labeled for inside & outside use.

go to the health food store get yourself some mint oil

not mint extract it has to be the oil

2 ounces will be about 20 dollars

put the two ounces in a pump up sprayer

like the ones used for spraying weeds

add about one and one half gallons water

    shake well

now spray your yard with a mist your dont have to get it very wet just a light mist works really well

spiders can not tolerate mint and they will move to a neighbor yard you will have to do this four or five times a year to keep it working

or you good spray once and start growing your own mint thru out the yard and they wont come back

I would have to agree with the first answer as daddy long legs are not going to hurt your children but will hunt down your widows. you can get an exterminator to come and spray but other then that you can only just kill them. You can also set up a bat house. It will attract bats and also help get rid of any mosquitos!

Pesticides will NOT harm your kids when used as directed but the black widows certainly will!

Daddy long legs are natural predators of the Black Widow...

Maybe hit up your friends and neighbors and relocate some daddy long legs...or get an outdoor kitty kitty..
