You want there long stay insurance which will provide cover from 2 to 18 months. They used to refund unused premiums if you returned home early provided you did not make a claim. They allow you to work and take part in dangerous sports (so long as they both incidental to your trip).

Their sales staff are very helpful and patient whilst willing to discuss your requirements. I'm not sure whether they are the cheapest anymore but they are definitely value for money.

Added note: They also provide their small print for your perusal before you buy. I know very few insurers who do this.

It really depends what you want coverage for. Your homeowners policy will probably cover theft. Your credit card may provide coverage for trip cancellation, etc. Your health insurance may provide coverage for medical emergencies. Best to be specific.
