My experience of happiness and what makes people happy is this: Happy people know that happiness and unhappiness are both different sides of the same coin. And happiness is not an arbitrary flip of that coin. Everyone has a choice. The difference is, happy people KNOW they have a choice. The KNOWLEDGE that there is a choice in life makes all the difference. Happy people know they are equal to, or greater than any circumstance they will ever face in their lives. By being equal to or better isn't a matter of wealth, beauty, physical strength, knowing the right people, knowing the right things, having God, having science, believing in something. It's none of those. It's knowing who you are, and having an ability to remember who you are, regardless of what's happening around you. This is a concept described very well by the following excerpt from poem "IF" by Rudyard Kipling, which I remember from childhood:
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise..."
Knowing who you are gives rise to having faith in yourself, and everyone, and everything, around you. This allows you to keep choosing happiness in every moment. From moment to moment, circumstances change, and we must evaluate how we feel about the circumstance and about ourselves. If you can choose to be happy in every moment, people in the world will see you as a very happy person. And your life becomes extroardinary.

a lot of people claim to believe in God, yet are truly unhappy. and there are people who don't know if God exists and have found some happiness in their lives. I think it's about learning to be happy along the journey and not waiting till you reach the destination. I have found peace and happiness in my life and i believe in God. i have always believed in God, but i always wasn't happy. now it's more about a personal spiritual relationship than a religious relationship. and those who try to force their beliefs one others, christian or otherwise, have issues with their own happiness.

I have no faith in any gods and I'm a happy person. God is just a superstition. Religious superstitions can work both ways. In once sense, yes, people do feel some artificial sense of safety thinking there is a god that loves them. However, they also have more worries about whether after death they'll go to Heaven or Hell, whether their loved ones will go to Heaven or Hell, and why a "loving" God allows really bad things to happen in the world and whether any of the bad things happening to people are their fault.
When random bad things happen to me, I don't feel guilty over it. I also don't dread the arbitrary decisions of a capricious god after death. The world also just makes a lot more sense without all the superstitious nonsense. All of this helps to make my life much happier.

i think happiness is one of those things that the more one tries to find it, the more it eludes you.
to be concerned about being happy is to show that you have expectations of what being happy means. to have expectations is the best way to never be happy, and fail to see real happiness when you do find it. additionally, there is no such thing as permanence for anything, including happiness. it will, like everything else, come and go.

Not at all.
There are happy AND unhappy people on both sides of the issue.

Happy people accept life without preconceived expectations. Religion really doesn't enter into the equation unless you want it to.
