What the deal with the grocery store?

How come when I walk into a large retail or grocery store they feel the need to blast me with air at the entrance?

Update:

M, B.Hound, and thosewerethedays, gave all very good answers. Thosewerethedays was the most detailed; however , teabat me must think alike because my first impression was a gaint conspiracy between the grociers and the hair-spray companies

The air pressure is to keep the outside air (and temperature) from getting in, so that they don't have to have doors for you to contend with. The "curtain" of air is just a walk-through substitute for a physical door.

It is called an air curtain. It keeps the heat from outdoors from coming into the store.

How bout that? And then there's the freezing cold in the Deli section. I asked Ralph's about that just yesterday and they told me they want to keep the food fresh. They want to keep Cocoa Puffs cold?

This blast is to keep the heat out and reduce AC costs.
