Hard drive indexing problem. Chkdsk won't fix?

I've been having problems with my computer rebooting on its own. Evenutally my pc wouldn't load windows. I found out the reason and fixed it, even reloaded windows. But now my hard drive has indexing errors that cause it to reboot every so often. Chkdsk won't fix it. Norton Disk Doctor won't. Both programs say something is using the computer and it can't continue. Even setting either program to do this at reboot won't help. How can I fix these problems?

I am assuming your os is xp(not an earlier version) and that you do not have or have not had two operating systems on this drive. Have you tried the fixboot.exe,fixmbr.exe or msconfig.exe( scanconfig.exe ) and chkdsk.exe from your repair tools on your xp disk , Then your in dos NOT while windows os is running in normal or safe mode and not at boot ,your operating system (the part your trying to fix) is running then , BUT IN DOS ! Then If they dont fix it then down load the soft ware utilities from the hard drive manufacturers web site Use the Low level format utility(from 31/2 floppy) from the hard drives utilities. LLFormat will actually fix bad sectors and scrub(not just delete) your drive clean. Then test the drive using hdd software utilities) ONLY IF IT TESTS GOOD ( If it tests bad buy a new drive) then partition and format and install windows xp in ntfs format (not fat32) Then install mother board drivers (only if audio drivers can be installed seperately from mother board drivers as VIDEO DRIVERS MUST BE INSTALLED BEFORE AUDIO DRIVERS to avoid conflicts and file corruption) RESTART Install video drivers RESTART Install audio drivers RESTART Install printer drivers RESTART Install your modem and internet access RESTART Down load all windows updates! RESTART Install anti virus RESTART install anti spyware RESTART Set all your prefferances and accounts Restart Create restore point and name it First. Use your ASR program and make your ASR access disk and name it FIRST and you'll have a clean stable system install with a solid clean back up No virus ,malware , spyware , corrupted operating system, progam or file can exist after a LL format. NOTHING! When you use quick format its all still there, just waiting to cause you grief !

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

With the symptoms you've described, it might be the windows indexing service is corrupted. I would disable the service, right click on the drive in explorer, select properties and uncheck the box that says " allow indexing of files and folders on this drive". This may not completely repair it. If this is XP, boot from the recovery console and use the "FIXMBR" tool.

It is really unnecessary for stand alone systems. It is primarily intended to speed up file retrieval for clients in small networks.

You might want to get the drive manufacturers diagnostic just to be sure your not looking at a dieing drive.

Part of it's difficult force overhead, side is more commonly a moment partiton. (Ex., My 320GB force whilst freshly formatted had approximately 298GB loose earlier than putting in Windows.) Secondly, you more commonly have a moment partition storing the repair and Windows set up records. Most of the massive laptop makers like HP set the drives up that means. Typically the moment partition is simply massive adequate to keep the ones records, approximately 8GB or so. See if there may be no longer a D: force on your My Computer record. To Windows it appears like a separate force.

Sounds bad. I think you're infected with a nasty virus, you can try fixing it yourself with expert help here:

Otherwise I'd say your hard drive is dying a slow death. Back up all of your important stuff and install a new hard drive if all else fails.
