The later model Beetles had a gas door located at the top of the fender close to the windshield; early ones, yes, you did have to open the hood (boot) to gain access to the fuel cap.

They are a classic these days; but, unless you've owned one before, you'd probably not like it. The late model ones were fuel injected 1975+ or later and don't have much horsepower. The early ones, can have handling problems (early ones to mid sixties or so had a swing axle rear suspension, don't release the throttle on a curve!), plus 6 volt systems which won't allow you to add accessories because everything sold in the US since 68 has been 12 volt negative ground.

But, the larger issue is that it is old technology; valve adjustments every 6 months, almost no heat or defroster unless traveling at speed or installing an assist blower to help with the meager flow at low speeds, drum brakes that need to be adjusted on a regular basis in order to stop the vehicle correctly (early models before 71? were drum brakes all the way around), poor wind resistance ( a factor in the San Francisco area especially on the Bay Bridge with the wind gusts), and early ones were also very slow to accelerate up to 25.0 seconds to reach 60 mph in stock form. You don't believe me, check out the acceleration specs for 1960-- you'd be surprised. And, before I forget, the fuel economy isn't anything to write home about either; mid to upper 20's highway if you're lucky.

The point that I'm trying to make is that what often looks good at first glance, doesn't translate into being practical. Among the vehicles I own is a 1974 AMC Sportabout D/L, which is a nice vehicle, but doesn't drive like a 2007 anything... It's powered by 105HP six, a/t, and takes 12.9 seconds to reach 60mph, which wasn't bad at the time. I don't know of any 2007 vehicle that is that slow today; a Vega or Pinto or Beetle from the same year are even a lot slower than that!

You can modify the Beetle to correct or update many issues, but some of the "faults" or characteristics will take a lot of effort, money and/or time to make the vehicle acceptable as everyday transport.

My suggestion is to drive one for a few days or even a week and see if you can live with it. I know that my AMC (which is totally stock) would not be a great everyday car; a great weekend car to take to the car shows or meets, yeah, but that's a different situation.

The fuel tank is in the front of the car,.....the filler hole is located on the upper part of the right (passenger) fender. The early VW Beetles were and still are GREAT cars. The super Beetle was not as popular due to a weaker front suspension. GOOD LUCK! Rob in Pa.

Depends on how old you are talking, very early bugs were in the trunk(front of course),later models were on the sides between the door hinges and front wheel fenders.

Opinions well if you have lots of loot to spend and do not mind paying someone else to do repairs, they are fun.Just don't sink a whole lot of cash into them, this is the kind of car that will two bit you to death.

The petrol cap is in the front under the bonnet. Remember the engine is in the rear, the fuel tank up front.
