maths question?

The strong monsoon winds caused a coconut tree 30m high to tilt at an angle of 80*[with respect to the ground ].A support wire 24m long is to be fixed at a point 5m from the top of the tree,so that the coconut tree becomes perpendicular to the ground. How far from the base of the coconut tree should the wire be fixed to the ground.

Are you sure the data is correct ?

    30-5 = 25 m

Now if the length below the wire is 25 m and the wire itself is 24 m, the angle opp the 25 m side should be greater.

And the largest angle in a right angle triangle is 90 degrees.

It's an application of the Pythagorean Theorem.

When the tree is perpendicular to the ground then it, the ground, and the wire form a right triangle with the height equal to 25m, the hypotenuse equal to 24 m and the distance along the ground equal to

    √(25²-24²) = 7 meters.

It would be the square root of (24 squared plus 25 squared.)
