what do i do about a boss who is a complete dick to me?

I work in a law office and it's just me and my boss, the lawyer. He's a complete dick to me. I have no room for advancement and there is nobody higher up than him. Everyday, he points out little mistakes that I've made, even when they're his mistakes. Just today he asked me to get him a copy of a mortgage, and when I came back with it, he asked me why I made a copy of the mortgage. When I replied that he had asked for it, he said he never said such a thing. But this has happened every day for the past year and a half, and I can't find another job because I'm lacking in experience... Any suggestions? Keep in mind I've confronted him about this before and asked that I be treated like some sort of dignified human, and not a dog, and he responded that he didn't know what I meant.

You have to consider that you DO have experience. You had enough to have gotten your current job! When you have an idiot boss berating you all the time it is hard to keep up your self esteem and remember that you DO have a lot to contribute! Plus you learned things on the job and you have the critically important experience of knowing what it is to work for a complete dick!

    :-)

Put out some resumes. If you get called for an interview DO NOT bad mouth your current boss. Just say you are looking for something with more of a future opportunity than you see at your current place. Never badmouth an employer. It looks really bad, even if it is totally justified.

    Get a new job.

Unfortunately, you have another problem, there is no way he will give you a recommendation worth a damn. I had a similar boss (not as bad, but bad enough) and she was so resentful when I got a different job that she tried to sabotage it.

You just need to take a long term approach. Get a new job and deal with the fact that you will likely not get a great job to start. However, it will get you out of your current position and leads you to better options.

You might try the offices of a different lawyer who knows you and your boss. That way, they know you are a good worker and know to take your boss with a "grain of salt."

I've been there. You can quit. That's pretty much it. But if you've been there for a year and a half, that seems life enough experience to me.

But don't quit without getting a new job first. It's a lot easier to get a job when you already have one. And don't trash your boss on interviews no matter what. No one will want to hire you if they think you're a backstabber.

I think I worked for that guy. The answer is, you have to work through the crappy jobs -- then, the better jobs are soooo nice!

Pretty much, as long as you need the experience, you have to suck it up and deal with it until you can find something better. I would recommend involving yourself in professional organizations for legal assistants and paralegals, because they offer ways for you to advance your career through continuing legal education, as well as offering job banks and stuff like that. Plus, membership looks good on a resume.

I hate to be the one to tell you but every lawyer I have ever worked for was a complete jerk. Maybe it is better in a legal department for a corporation. I would just work hard and act happy and don't confront him or point out his numerous mistakes.

You either get a new job with a different company or while your boss is being how he is always going be, think to yourself, this job is not going to last forever!

Ask his to put all his requests to you in writing. LOL! Hey, if he goes for it, you're covered. But since he's the Boss, you're screwed.

Option 2 - Get in his face. Maybe he'll fire you, and you can get unemployment while looking for work. Just make sure he's been paying employment insurance...

If you have been with him for a year, you have experience. There isn't a thing you can do about this except change jobs.

Keep looking for another job. You got this one with no experience so you should have a better shot of getting an new job.

Unfortunately, being a dick is not illegal. If it was, we would need bigger jails. He sounds anal retentive. Once again, this in not illegal.

Unless the harrassment is racial or sexual, all you can do is quit.
