How can I stop my puppies from biting each other?

I have a 6 month old male Pug and just a few days ago adopted a 5 month old female black lab. They play constantly but my concern is that the play is so aggressive. They bite each other more than anything else, and my fear is that the lab will hurt my pug. I know it has only been a few days, but I hate seeing the "playful aggression" between them. Any suggestions?

    This is normal play.

If neither one of them yelps or cries, they are fine.

Mine play like that all the time. Sometimes you'd think there would be blood but if I look at their necks, there's not even a red mark.

If you think they are getting too rough, tell the "EASY" and separate them for a minute or two. Play biting is normal dog play. And Labs are known for having soft mouths. It's good they like each other so much.

It's not playful aggression.. It's just being a pup and they will work this out for themselves. When they are tired enough I bet they back off and sleep....And if your lab does hurt your pug your pug will get him back and they'll never do it again... It's like two children fighting.

This is perfectly normal behaviour and I wouldn't worry about it. Play biting is a natural way for them to release energy and it also helps them determine dominance. You may have already noticed that a serious yelp from one causes the other to back off a bit. You only need to be concerned if you notice the bites are breaking skin and the other does not release.

I think the only time you have to worry is if your pug yells out when he gets bit and the lab keeps biting. Dogs play rough, it;s ok, they like it. it's good exercise and they sound like have bonded nicely, becoming there own pack. plus they still have there baby teeth too, so i'm sure it doesn't hurt all that bad. go to the library and get a dog book. they have alot of good ones out there that explains regular behaviors of dogs.

  • That's what dogs do. If they get to rough with each other, they will let the other know.

As long as it does not turn to serious aggression, let them have their fun.

Its natural for puppies to be playfully aggressive with each other; unless they start drawing blood from each other I wouldn't worry about it.
