Each person's rights extend to another person's nose?

For instance, with health care, I view the lack of health care as doing harm to a good number of people. Therefore, I think it an absolute crime that this country lacks adequate healthcare for so many people. On the other hand, I view gay marriage as a non-issue. I fail to see how gays marrying affects my marriage in any way and also fail to see how granting civil unions affects me in any way. Am curious to see how others interpret the statement "another person's rights extend to another person's nose."

You made two statements (1) health-care - I agree that health-care is important, but, being more important to those whom "pay for it" then those whom don't. They will be forced to buy a coverage that may be unused for years, losing an average of $6k a year plus I feel a annual rebate should be given to those whom pay and keep themselves in good health, and (2) gay marriages non-issue - I don't get involved in discrimination at all as long as no-one is making laws to insert and change the doctrine of any faith, I will not attack the subject. This is what exactly happened when the government oversteps their authority to strong arm the doctrines of faith. It is a issue for strong faith-based believers, and it is not that a person is gay either. It has nothing to do with that. The church was taught through its own teaching to accept everyone but not to add or subtract from the doctrine of God.

I'm completely with you on the first two issues. Now, some people like to say that marriage is a condition in which people are expected to have children. If that's the case, then should elderly people be disallowed to get married? Or what about women like me who've had a tubal ligation...if I ever become widowed, should I be denied the right to remarry? It's all about someone ELSE's religious views. I don't think gay people can screw up the institution of marriage any worse than straight people have.

Now, the "nose" thing. I believe you're speaking of smoking. As a considerate smoker, I wouldn't dream of lighting up in another person's home (unless given express permission) and smoking has been banned in all businesses except for restaurants and bars in my state. (These establishments have the right to be non-smoking, however.)

Of course there are busybodies who want legislation banning smoking in ALL such establishments. I say that if someone's offended by (or allergic to) cigarette smoke, then he/she can patronize the non-smoking establishments. Give us a break, for Christ's sake; this country would be in the toilet if it weren't for the enormous taxes paid by smokers on the product they purchase.

I see it as simply as one persons rights go as far as not to affect someone elses life. I am more concerned with illegals getting more benefits than I can, because I'm a citizen and I can still work. My disabled grandfather had to beg and plead and go to court to get a fraction of what they will give someone who's never paid a tax and never paid into social security. I could care less if men and women want to marry each other. You're exactly right.. it really doesn't affect me unless I let it.

i am not saying either way on my stance on gay marriage or civial unions, but I will say this and that is that gay marriage and civial unions dont just let a man/man or woman/woman relationship show they really love each other.

It affects many laws. It makes them open to health benifits of their partners and life insurance and inheritance. as well as survivor benifits among many other things so it is something that does affect more than just a wedding and 2 rings.

You've got it bass-ackwards. It goes "Your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins."
