Female Labrador?

Hi, I am just curious as to what some opionions from other users are regarding breeding female labs.

I have a female lab that is just about ready if not all ready started her first heat!

One Vet in town says it's okay to go ahead and breed the first heat.

The other Vet in my town says to wait till at least the second heat if not the third??

I have spent a lot of time looking this up on the internet tonight and I find info that says both or okay. What do you Yahoo users think?? Opinions please! :)

I used to work at a vet, and most breeders would wait until after the first heat cycle to breed (aka on the second). The consensus is that the dog is not yet totally physically mature yet as of that age.

Breeding a female on her first heat is like breeding a 7 year old child. The female is not mentally or physically mature enough to have a litter without some serious issues with her or the pups being a huge possibility. Also, younger dogs are much more likely to reject the litter entirely, requiring the owner to bottle feed. Females should be at least 2 years old before breeding. Any younger is irresponsible and just asking for trouble.

I think you have found yourself 2 idiot vets who would love to see you breed your female too early so they can make a fortune off your inexperience and when you have to rely on them for a c-section later.. They know that you'll have to pay up or lose mom and the pups.. You are under their thumb.. Do the right thing and wait til she is at least 2 years of age and mentally and physically able and capable of producing a litter... Vets are stupid about this breeding thing.. I am not sure why they tell people such a stupid thing.. Our neighbour went ahead and bred their lab on her first heat. She wouldn't dilate and OMG needed a emergency c-section.. She nearly died.. Vets had a good chuckle over that one likely.. Instead of not being needed at all.. They got the c-section price PLUS the fact that it was an emergency.. and they can charge far more..

OH yeah, neighbours little b itch is a screwball now.. They no longer have her in the house cause she is aggressive and pees everywhere.. I guess cause she had a litter so young, and had problems, she can no longer hold her pee... Plus she nips at the kid all the time.. Now she lives outside on a chain. They did keep one of her kids and that pup lives in the house.. Quite the slap in the face for the b itch who went thru all that for them.. She is outside, her pup is inside.. for now..

please just get her fixed.. there are already 17,000 unwanted labs, just in the state of California. plus has she had the health check, the bones, e-rays. has she been shown, has the male? are you ready to take care of the pups if the homes they are going to cant take care of them. are you ready to spend 1,000+ dollars on them before they go to the homes? are you ready to pay for a c-section, or be prepared if she has complications and dies? just dont do it!
