Nursing a 5 week old exclusively, just got my period.?

This is my third child and for the first time I have been able to breastfeed without supplementation. She is doing well, we just went through a growth spurt even- the whole time she seems satisfied and is very healthy. At birth she was 6.4lbs, 2-weeks 6.8lbs and just Wednesday she was 7.14.5lbs. I started yesterday but wasn't sure till today- I have heard periods don't usually come until the third month or so, what am I doing wrong???I am so unsure-I know my baby would act different if not satified, but I need peace of mind for myself. Please write any experiences or advice- I know of La Leche league and have many books...I don't want to fail again this time, nursing means alot to me and I really want to succeed in doing so. Thanks for all of your help.

You are not doing anything wrong. If she is gaining weight well, and seems to be satisfied, she is getting everything she need. As far as your period, everyone is different. Some Mothers don't start again for 6 months and others the next month after delivery. Don't stress. That will certainly decrease you milk production. It sounds like you are doing a great job, just enjoy that new baby.

The baby is only 5 weeks old, this could be "delayed bleeding". But even if its a period, big deal; that is not a measure of successful nursing. The proof is in the baby:

Is she gaining at least 4 to 7 ounces a week?

Does she have 6 to 8 wet diapers a day?

Does she have bowel movements that are not hard? (they can be soft, seedy looking, messy).

Does she nurse 8 to 12 times a day?

    (around the clock)

Is she content; do you see active sucking and hear swallowing?

All the answers should be yes.

Sometimes cycles return when a baby skips the night feedings.

Don't worry about it; just enjoy this experience.

  • I can tell you, from my own personal experience, that you are just fine!!! I nursed my 4 year-old exclusively until she was 3 1/2 months and I still got my period as in I wasn't. And I am still nursing my now 10 month-old son exclusively (he's also on baby food), but I still get my period regularly with him too.

Keep up the good work. And remember, you are fine. Every pregnancy, labor, and delivery is different. So your body is going through normal changes.

Having your period shouldn't change how much milk is coming in if you have enough to not need supplementation. I breast fed both my kids months after I started my peroid and it didn't seem to have any difference. I guess for some people you can start your monthly cycles earlier then others. It's probably something to do with your hormones being different this time around since you are producing more milk then you usually do. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Keep going with it, you're doing great.

I too am a mom of 3 and nursed all of my children, but was only exclusive with my last one (he is now 14 months). I got my period when he was 6 weeks old and was unable to get thoroughly checked out at my 6 week GYN appointment! You are not doing anything wrong but please don't believe the myth that breastfeeding prevents ovulation... My two daughters are almost 13 months apart as a result...lol. Good luck to you and congrats on making this healthy choice for your little one.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Sometimes you just get your period early. I nursed exclusively and when my son started eating a little cereal (6 months) I got my period. My friend nursed and didn't get her period for a year, even though her son had started solids six months earlier.

Don't for a second think it has anything to do with your milk or ability to nurse. It's just about your cycle. It's a shame you got it so soon, but there's nothing you can do. It won't interfere with your milk, don't even think about the two in connection with each other. You're doing great! Keep nursing!

Every woman, every body, every baby is different. Just because you started your period again does not mean you're not satisfying her. Also if she is only 5 weeks this could still be initial pp bleeding mine was off and on for about 7 weeks. Even if it is an actual period you're not doing anything wrong not all women are so lucky as to not have a period for months after birth! I certainly wasn't!

definite, you are able to proceed to breastfeed. Your milk will develop into colostrum faster or later, now and returned as early as sixteen weeks and now and returned no longer till the previous few months of your being pregnant. the significant ingredient is which you, your nursing toddler, and your unborn toddler all advance and income weight. you may desire to stay hydrated and get each and all of the supplementations you want. simply by fact your breast milk will exchange in flavor and quantity, you may desire to locate that your toddler desires greater or that they no longer pick to breastfeed. that's whilst supplementing turns into something to contemplate. additionally undergo in recommendations that breastfeeding can set off contractions, nonetheless that's in basic terms like having intercourse in case you're pregnant and not something to stress approximately. (till there's conceivable of untimely exertions or you're bleeding.) the significant ingredient is which you're all healthful, you're all getting the nutrition you want, and which you're gentle breastfeeding once you're pregnant.

number 1 no matter what happens you have not failed, you have given your baby the best start and even if someone only manages a couple of feeds they should never think that thay have failed

getting your period should have no effect on your babies feeding, just keep going and as long as yourself and your health visitor are happy with her growth you are doing fine

Getting your period is not a gauge of "bad nursing". Your nursing is fine. You got your period- and it has nothing to do with nursing. That's why nursing is not a reliable form of birth control- because you can still get your period even while nursing exclusively. Best of luck.
