Why do "messianic Jews" observe Yom Kippur?
My neighbor is from latin america and claims to be a messianic Jew and claims to have a grandparent with a Jewish last name that ends with "ez" but didn't grow up Jewish. She says they are having Yom Kippur? I also hear she won't convert because she claims to be Jewish now that she found out her last name is Jewsih.
In all the years of my life, I had never heard of such nonesense.

It is nonsense. Messianics brainwash their kids into believing Judaism is a race and not a religion, because that's the only way they can be considered Jewish--by race. The Messianic movement was started by a Baptist minister to fool Jews into converting to Xianity. These people often have no Jewish background at all but like to tell Jews they're wrong, no matter what we're saying--including that Judaism is not a race, it's a religion. But if they were to believe that, they wouldn't be able to claim they're Jewish anymore, so they keep the blindfolds on.
There is no such thing as a Messianic Jew.
Peace

Do you "observe" Christmas? I think it is in whatever you mean by "observe" that decides the answer to this one. Are we (Messianic Jews) saved by observing Yom Kippur? No, that's not what we believe. But most of us do honor/observe Yom Kippur. It makes a whole lot more sense than honoring (observing) special days God never created. There's massive amounts of lessons for young and old in walking yourself through a day the way Torah says to do it. Sure, without the whole old priesthood (unnecessary, as you say) its not the same but just as there's no better way to really learn and understand the power of the Blood of the Lamb of God than by observing a Passover (the biblical way, as it's written) the same can be said of Yom Kippur and Yom Teruah, etc. Do you teach your children of the great gift that the Son of God, born of the virgin, as was foretold, mid December aka Christmas? And why not? It sure beats the story/myth of Santa Claus.

I know many Jews, and many living in Israel, who believe in Yeshua (Jesus) as Messiah. They are the Messianic Jews. They see how Yeshua fulfilled every prophesy laid out for the Messiah beginning with Is. 53 and throughout the Tanakh. How every feast has a prophesy for Messiah and how Yeshua fulfilled the Spring feasts and the Fall Mo'idim will be fulfilled on His return. I have worshipped with them for years, but never considered myself Jewish for a minute.....nor do the other gentiles I know who worship with them. I know there are some weird fringe people who call themselves messianic, but their theology does not follow scripture accurately. I only contribute here to testify of those I know who are Jewish and who aren't and yet they worship together. Blessings.

Don't confuse people who call themselves "messianic Jews" with people of the Jewish religion.
"Messianic Jews" is a code name for Christians who are trying to mislead Jews. They are to be condemned for their lying methods, and for underestimating the intelligence of their Jewish "targets."

I find it offensive because these people are **not** Jewish. Period.
This is taken from the reference section of this article:

1. “"We believe that Jewishness is a birthright. It is inherited from our parents. Our people are not of one culture; we have diverse cultural expressions (Ashkenazi/Sephardi, Georgian/Russian, Ethiopian, Persian, etc.). Our people are not of one religion. While Judaism might be the traditional religion for many Jewish people, Jews are still considered Jewish even though they might be atheists or even if they embrace other beliefs. Those who say that Jews who believe in Jesus are errant Jews or misguided Jews are entitled to their opinions. But they are not entitled to negate our Jewishness. We are Jews by birth and that cannot change."
2. "There is virtual unanimity across all denominations [of Judaism] that Jews for Jesus are not Jewish." (Kaplan, Dana Evan. The Cambridge Companion to American Judaism, Cambridge University Press, Aug 15, 2005, pp. 139-140).
3. "For most American Jews, it is acceptable to blend some degree of foreign spiritual elements with Judaism. The one exception is Christianity, which is perceived to be incompatible with any form of Jewishness. Jews for Jesus and other Messianic Jewish groups are thus seen as antithetical to Judaism and are completely rejected by the majority of Jews". (Kaplan, Dana Evan. The Cambridge Companion to American Judaism, Cambridge University Press, Aug 15, 2005, p. 9).
4. Jewish groups:
o "To make the record clear, Jews for Jesus is a Christian missionary organization – period." Jews for Jesus: Jewish or Christian? You Decide, Jews for Judaism website, retrieved September 11, 2006.
o "Messianic Jewish organizations, such as Jews for Jesus, often refer to their faith as fulfilled Judaism, in that they believe Jesus fulfilled the Messianic prophecies. Although Messianic Judaism claims to be Jewish, and many adherents observe Jewish holidays, most Jews regard Messianic Judaism as deceptive at best, fraudulent at worst. They charge that Messianic Judaism is actually Christianity presenting itself as Judaism." (Balmer, Randall. Encyclopedia of Evangelicalism, Baylor University Press, Nov 2004, p. 448).

Yom Kippur (Hebrew:יוֹם כִּפּוּר ) is a Jewish holiday, known in English as the Day of Atonement. With its central themes of atonement and repentance for sins against both God and one's fellow man, Yom Kippur is the most solemn of the Jewish holidays.
The Torah calls the day Yom HaKippurim (יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים) and in Leviticus 23:27 decrees a strict prohibition of work and affliction of the soul upon the tenth day of the seventh month, later known as Tishrei. It is commemorated in Rabbinic Judaism with a 25-hour fast and intensive prayer.
Not all Jewish folk are "practicing" or Orthodox Jews but more and more are converting back to their heritage religion. It's sad that she wasn't raised in her Jewish faith.
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
According to the "Christian" Bible, Paul says that God will bless or chastise the Jews first... as His chosen people, who are supposed to be examples to the rest of the world.... then the Gentiles.

Why does it bother you ,and others , so much ? Is atonement not for all of us whether Jew or Gentile ? Shouldn't all of us take time out to make sure our wrongs are covered?
It seems to me that many Jewish people are too concentrated on protecting their own "Jewishness" that they can't see the forest for the trees.
For people to be Messianic Jews is no threat to any of you. I am not a Messianic Jew but if I was I would not be one because I thought it was detracting from some "Jewish" person's worship of G_D.
You do believe that a Messiah will come so what does that make you?? Relax! Nobody wants to "take your Jewishness away from you" nor do they allow you to stifle or disallow them to worship G_D and Yeshua.
