Is this a rules issue or other ...?

When a MLB starting pitcher is struggling early in a game but isn't yanked, why doesn't he go to the bullpen to work on whatever is bothering him while his team is batting? Hitters can use the cages in the tunnel if they're there but you only usually see pitchers talking about it with pitching coaches and maybe the catcher, never actually acting it out with live action. Why not?

Update:

Tee Dub and others that have yet to reply ... If they wanted to throw the least pitches possible, then why do they throw eight warm-ups before every inning? Those aren't included in pitch counts so I don't believe that this would be the primary reason.

There isn't enough time between innings for one. Also, this would be the time for a pitcher to rest. Too much pitching without enough rest is only going to hurt the cause. In addition it's not likely that you can fix much during a game. You either have a groove and pitch well or you don't. The only thing that you can really improve upon during a start is mechanics and location, and both can be improved during the 8 warmups each inning.

It's not a rules thing...but just practical as far as not wasting pitches. Any practice pitches the pitcher takes can take away from the number of pitches he'll make in the game, especially if he can recover and stay in the game for at least 5-6 innings or more.

Because it tires out the arm....Chances are whatever the issue is is best worked on during side sessions between starts. Some days you just dont have it.

And those warmup pitches are at 70% tops.....

First of all, they need to rest.

The lack of rest combined with the extra pitches would wear them out sooner.

that may solve the problem, but they would not last much in the game do to getting tired to fast. like in any sport, some days you got it and some days you dont.
