  • Yeah, and he picked a Democratic running mate because keeping the Union together was his primary goal. Yes, he was less about freeing the slaves than he was about reunification. It was during Reconstruction--i.e., after John Wilkes Booth put a bullet in Lincoln's head and made Andrew Johnson president--that the Republican Party became the gang we know and loathe today.

I suggest you read Sarah Vowell's "Assassination Vacation" for more insight into what happened to the Republican Party after Lincoln was assassinated.

Strom Thurmond was a Democrat until, I believe, the mid-1960s when the Civil Rights Act was signed, and it was because of the Democratic Party. As several people have pointed out, the parties have changed greatly over the past 30 years. Until Reagan took over, I don't believe the GOP was the Jesus Party it is today.

Lincoln became a Republican and whilst the Whigs occasion shutdown some switched to Democrat and others switched to Republican. the reason Whigs occasion shutdown interior the 1st place is with the help of the fact they became divided, Lincoln switched to the Republican occasion simply by fact he believed of their political ideals greater so then the Democrats like for occasion liberating the slaves witch of direction is what the Republican occasion became in line with. Liberals constantly attempt to take credit for something it incredibly is stable and blame the Republicans for each thing it incredibly is undesirable, maximum Republicans that i recognize can see there is stable and undesirable people in the two political events however the different hand maximum Liberals that I had talked with suggested all Liberals is stable and all Republicans is undesirable for this reason maximum Democrats call Lincoln a Liberal attempting to take credit for his stable paintings. If people took the time to look at Lincoln political ideals like for occasion economy, social, and the protection stress they could see his perspectives are in basic terms like the Republican occasion we see right this moment common-sense. in case you will do study superb to be open mined and not basically have self belief what you pick to pay attention additionally don't be bias.

Yes, but Republican meant a totally different thing back then!

  • 1 decade ago

Yes -- at that time, most liberals were within the Republican party -- as were most of those who wanted a strong central federal govt.

The Democrats, at that time, were the wealthy landowners from the south who wanted state-based power, and what would be considered a conservative view on social changes.

The two parties basically swapped positions over the next century.
