I just had my kitchen cabinets repainted.?

It has been 10 years since the cabinets were painted. Last time the guy used the kind that washes off easy and this time I thought that is what I bought. But it is not sticking to the old paint. It looks ok but when I hung my clock, just barely touching the wall with the clock made the paint peel. What can I do to fix it? Do I have to remove all this new paint? It seems like if I paint over this that is not sticking, it still will come off! Any advise is appreciated!

lord brandi it sounds like you put latex on oil if so you got a world of trouble cause waterbased does not stick to oil the painter should have known this and tested the old finish to determine what it was did you use oil for the repaint?

I can almost guarantee that what happened is that the original paint was an oil-based paint and you bought latex paint and then painted your cabinets. You have to apply a coat of primer when you are painting latex over oil-based paint. At this point you will have to sand off what you just painted on. Primer the cabinets and then repaint them with the color that you chose. It is a common mistake but sadly it will take alot of work to correct the problem.

  • It wasn't primed properly. It sounds like a latex or acrylic was put over oil based without a primer. Unfortunately, the only way to fix it is to sand well...and do it right.. Be sure to rough up the surface to insure a good bond

If you had someone else do this for you, contact them ASAP and ask for satisfaction to your problem. I would even take photos of the cabinets, just in case. If it was a "professional," they should be willing to correct the problem, because their reputation depends on it. You might even say, "I was hoping I could recommend you to my friends, but..."
