Know your W2K Registry? What does deleting Open in a subkey actually do?

Hi folks,

I'd been getting RemoteAccess errors on each bootup so I disabled both Managers as well as Routing and Remote Access, but that created 2 new errors repeating 104 times per minute.

One was Event ID 1008 Perflib - so I did this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > RemoteAccess > Performance

Delete the value " Open " and reboot.

I now have a 'clean sheet' on bootup, but am wondering what it is I've actually done by deleting Open and whether it is safe.

Do I still have the errors occurring but are no longer logged?

Or what?

I ask because the computer crashed about 5 hours after the reboot.

Is there any connection?

Please comment without assuming I'll know what you mean.

Thanks.

You are correct, if you still have errors they are not being logged. see link for Microsoft's solution.

If for example you scan the computer for a virus you have several methods of removing it. The Permanent way is to remove it via the Registry. When you have the name of the Virus you go to Start / Click onto the RUN box and type in

regedit and Press OK. You are now in the Registry page.Click on EDIT followed by clicking onto Find What and type in the name of the File.and when the file is found it will be highlighted. Right click the file and then click Delete. You will receive a new window asking if you want to Delete the KEY and SUBKEYS. Click YES od OK.The file will be Permanently Deleted. I am giving you the explanation because what you now need to do is a complete re-installation which is also known as Reverting the Computer to Factory Spec which means that only the pre-installed programmes will be available. You WILL lose all other files unless you now transfer them to a disk. If the Operating System was pre-installed then one of the following KEY combinations will carry out the necessary procedure. Reboot the computer and as it is Rebooting Press and keep Pressing F11 and follow the on screen instructions. If that does not work then Press and keep Pressing F11 and CTRL together. If that does not work then Press and keep Pressing F10. If that does not work then Press and keep Pressing F10 and ALT together. In ALL of the afore-mentioned procedures follow the on screen instructions. At some point you will be prompted to Register now or Later. Put a checkmark in the box to Register later.
