Evangelicals who revile against LDS/Mormons?

…and call us blasphemers and liars (so not all Evangelicals – just the ones who persecute the Saints in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)

How do you justify your actions/words with regard to these 2 scriptures below (admittedly taken out of context after a fashion) – but the spirit of these scriptures lends itself to saying that those who preach goodness and do good to others is on the side of the Lord?

Mark 9:40 -- For he that is not against us is on our part.

Luke 9:50 -- And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

The LDS church does much good in the world and its members are known world-wide as good “family” people and good members of society (with very few notable exceptions).

So are you acting against the principles of these 2 scriptures and if not, how do you justify your actions?

Thanks

D

Update:

jbarelli,

Are you justifying persecution because of your definition of Christian?

LDS say nothing against other religions -- we disagree doctrinally like every other religion

Update 2:

I don't know who gives the "thumbs down"

I do want your opinion although you didn't answer my follow up.

Here's another one to add to the list for them to consider

    Acts 5

    34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;

35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.

36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.

37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.

38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:

39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

oops! two great minds with but a single thought!

Their hate for use makes no sense to me. We do good, we live good/moral lives. But if I was Satan and my sole purpose was to destroy God's work...then I guess I would work the hardest on the church that has the truth. The LDS church is the fastest growing Christian church in the world. 13,000,000 member in less than 200 years. That's fast. Especially when converts make up 2/3 of the churches growth each year! :)

answer: I agree. that's extremely no longer elementary and maximum of them won't pay attention. they only can no longer conceive of all people's faith being surprising - which includes Judaism. They in all hazard think of they have greater of of project with Jews than pagans on account which you believe interior an identical deity, surprising? the only distinction between the religions is Jesus, surprising? (and a few Christians rather believe that, too) a number of them will "love" you to death in the event that they might't convert you. Others particularly believe they try to shop you from eternal torment. tell them No, firmly and in the event that they push - stroll away.

    Omg!

You dare confront Evangelicals with what the Bible actually says?

You so crazy, lol. I SWEAR some people for get the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I don't sit there and criticise your religion. I (personally) don't sit there and say anyone's faith is flawed and broken. I DO think your religion must be flawed and broken if you can spew hatred the way I've heard...

    Source(s): I'm mormon. Don't hate, appreciate, lmao

This is great! We offend people by saying we have the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and we are not supposed to be offended when you make a comment specifically about our religion and call us non Christians. jbarelli, your logic is wakko, and I will give you a thumbs down!

Well, your church is leading millions to hell by teaching them that they can become gods, that Christ was created, and that their works can make them righteous. SO all the good your church does doesn't compare to the millions who will go to hell because they fell for it's deception.

Your church, would abandon its strange doctrines if it were really for Christ.

    I don't get it either...

You could add the Golden Rule to this list of passages- I don't know anyone who likes to be the recipient of hateful stuff like we get.....

I'm putting this on my watchlist- see if/how they justify their actions...

Somehow I doubt that you'll get many of the folks that rail against you to answer this question, but I also doubt that this is much of a surprise to you.

So, perhaps a bit of insight from a person that has discussed issues with evangelicals on a Christian-to-Christian level might help.

The LDS church has a fundamentally different view of Jesus and our relationship with God than the majority of Christian churches. Unlike the relatively insignificant differences between other denominations, these are some pretty important doctrinal differences.

Please note, I'm not debating whether your view or ours is closer to scripture. That is a different debate for another day.

From this comes the conclusion that, so far as most Christian denominations are concerned, you may be fine folks, but you aren't Christian. Moreover, while your views take you out of what most Christians consider to be the Christian church, you folks keep insisting that not only are you Christians, but that the rest of us are following a degraded and error-filled interpretation based on faulty translation of scripture.

I can understand where some folks might take offense at that.

Personally, and I think that I can speak for most mainstream Christians, I see the LDS church as being another religion, with some beliefs in common with mainstream Christianity, but with other beliefs that place you outside the faith that we call "Christian".

Most of us have nothing against you folks, any more than we do against Unitarians or Muslims, two other faiths with whom we share some beliefs, but with whom we have important doctrinal differences.

I know Unitarians and Muslims that have strong family values. The Quran has some beautiful passages that speak of mercy and justice and care of family, as does the Book of Mormon.

Nobody is complaining that LDS church members aren't good citizens. Where folks "persecute" you (and I would propose that this word does not really fit the current situation) is in saying that you aren't really "Christians".

Sorry that bothers you, but from our perspective, you aren't.

    ** Additional note **

I notice that a few folks don't seem to like this answer, although the answers from an LDS perspective seem to be popular.

This begs the question of why you asked for an outside perspective, if you really just wanted answers from folks that believe as you do.

    ** Further additions **

"Persecution" - we need to have a common definition of this word for any discussion.

I would propose that "persecution" is persistent mistreatment of an individual or group by another group.

Now, I do not, nor have I ever endorsed mistreatment of LDS church members (or any other religion, for that matter).

I realize that some LDS church members consider the widespread belief that the LDS church is not a Christian denomination to be "persecution", but I'm having difficulty fitting that belief into the definition of "persecution" above.

There may be (almost certainly) some instances of discrimination against LDS members, just as there are some instances of discrimination by LDS members against members of other faiths.

But last time I checked, LDS members are free to worship as they choose, free to work, travel, marry, vote, buy and sell property, etc... There's currently a prominent LDS member running for President, who was elected Governor of a state with a rather small LDS minority.

While historically, there have been cases that easily fall under the definition of "persecution", I am speaking of modern society.

So, no, I do not try to defend persecution. People disagreeing with you, even vigorously, does not rise to that level.

Overseas, there are instances of LDS church members being persecuted, just as there are Christians, Muslims, Buddists, Hindus and just about any other religious group being persecuted.

But being told that most Christians don't consider your church to be Christian does not rise to the level of persecution.

Just as your belief that my faith is in error doesn't mean that you are persecuting me. You are welcome to feel offended, but being offended does not equate to being persecuted.

Beyond this, I've got things to do, so must sign off for now. Feel free to e-mail me (my Yahoo e-mail link is just for this purpose), as this is an interesting discussion, but not really appropriate for this venue.

You don't have to be an Evangelical to do that.
