Why should we avoid the appearance of the occasion of sin?

the appearance of impropriety can be as bad or worse than real impropriety.

it only takes one occasion of apparent cheating on your spouse, to damage trust.

it only takes one accusation (even if unfounded) of rape or child abuse or molestation to tarnish a reputation/record/whatever.

so many things just the appearance of something can be just as bad as actually doing it.

and to add insult to injury, if you only LOOK like you didn't, .... theres less likely to be evidence regarding it... because its subjective and all. if it *looks* like you did... then you probably *actually* had the OPPORTUNITY to, so little to no evidence that you did not actually do it...

if someone sees you as a role model, it doesn't take *actaully* doing it to have the effect, if its appearance is observed.

It's not a matter of who is looking or not looking to see you appearing to be evil or sinning. It's a matter of personal integrity. Are you going to place yourself in situations or places where if someone did see you, they might think you were doing something wrong? Even if you aren't doing anything wrong, why would there be that appearance? You must be dressed immodestly, or in a shady bar, or with your hand in some cookie jar or another. If you are living on the edge, not sinning but dangerously close, then you have opportunities to fall that wouldn't be there if you were standing in good places, doing good things, hanging out with good people.

From a Biblical standpoint - there is a passage that instructs believers to avoid the appearance of evil-- it is telling believers that how other people view our actions and attitudes matters.

For example if you saw your Pastor walking out of a bar-- did he sin? Will he doesn't seem drunk, he's over the age of 21, so technically he may not have sin- but the appearance of coming out of a bar- can hurt his ability to share with others. For those who choose to follow the Bible and care about obeying God its a reminder that the Bible isn't just a set of "rules" but it is instruction as to how to love God and to show love and consideration for other people.
