What happens if you Don't pay your credit cards in the States?

My friend has a few credit cards that she cannot pay! Her highest one is just $1,500. What will happen if she doesn't pay her credit cards. She said someone told her that her credit will be cleared in 7 years. And that since the cards are for so little that the odds of them suing for such a small amount is slim. Is this true? What should she do?

Update:

She would like to make payments, but the interest rate is really high! Plus, because she never has made the first payment the minimum payment is over $700.00. She is in a tight spot financially, and has a job, but the payment was ridiculous from the get go (I'm assuming because of the interest rate). What can she do?

NO it's not true at all. It depends on the company. And I've had stuff on my credit and it's been over 7 years.

It all depends on the creditor.

$1500 is sorta a lot. My mom's husband just got sued by Capital One for $1200

The sheriff came to the house with orders..

Filing Bankruptcy only stays on your credit for about 3 years.

My mom did it because of her husband, and she's considering it again, because he keeps getting them into debt.

Source(s): And what should she do.. She should pay back her debts instead of eating out, or buying new clothes, she should live like she has no money and pay off her debts. *** She can negotiate with a credit company about the interest but most likely wont be able to get them lowered. She will need to see the help of a credit counseling place or consolidation, but when you are using those programs, you are not allowed to take on any more debt... I hate to sound rude, but if the girl can't even make her first payment she has no business with credit cards... I'm sure there are many corners she can cut, and live without. Even if she pays $100 a month, then it shows she's paying. Or she can feel free to sell all that stuff she bought with her credit cards and start paying it back. But she wont do that.... she doesn't obviously care enough. I guess she learned one valuable lesson.

People are mistaken if they think debt is going to go away after 7 years. It doesn't. If she applies for a car loan, or a mortgage it's going to be hard getting approved. Phone calls and letters from them will not stop. Every effort should be made to repay. Call and ask for a reduced percentage on interest and begin making some kind of payment.

    Is she broke?

It is not that she can get rid off her debt in another seven years. There always remains a probability of getting sued.

If she has credit card debts ask her to go for a credit card debt consolidation. She can take up a job to pay for it.
