What happened with the distribution of the film "Across the Universe?"?

Oprah featured the director and main cast members, urging everyone to go see it, and we all know what an endorsement from Oprah Winfey can mean! It was supposed to open nationally the weekend of Sept. 21, but we finally spotted it in a small advertisement this weekend, and had only two metro area theaters to choose.

It's wonderful, by the way! Just wondering what went wrong with its earlier plans for wide distribution.

I read on one of the message boards at IMDB that there is a feud between Sony Pictures and the producers (or directors or something). That's why they're holding back on a wider distribution. Stupid greedy studio politics.

Here's what one of the posts says:

Sony was in battle with Taymor over the film and decided to repay her indignation of keeping with the film's original vision by not releasing the film as promised. The film release date, originally applied to the 21st of September was scrubbed for no reason. Personal battles over who had more power in the film community continued as Sony Pictures refused to keep to their word to release the picture on the 28th of September.

To date, no national release date has been set.

Its wide opening is Oct. 12.

From the Reuters News Service box office report for this past weekend:

"Also new to the top-10 was the Beatle-themed musical romance "Across the Universe," which jumped three places to No. 10 with $2.1 million in its third weekend. The Columbia Pictures release has earned $5.5 million. Currently playing in just 339 theaters, the film will go into broad release on October 12."
