Hey everyone, I need your advice, PLEASE!?

My husband and I FINALY sold our home and we couldn't be more pleased with our new home. However, I work now an hour away from work. I want to stay at my new job, but this is going to now be an 1 hr 30 min. drive for me. I don't care about the drive. I work at home 3 days a week and go into the office 2 days a week. But I'm afraid my boss is going to be mad and let me go. I didn't tell him we were possibly moving because we weren't sure it was going to happen. Now I'm afraid to tell him. Should I tell him over the phone or tell him in person that I will only be an extra 30 minutes away. Do you think he will fire me?

Thanks in advance. I'm really freaking out guys, so any advice is welcome!

Why do you have to tell your boss you moved? Why would he care? As long as you come in on time it shouldn't be an issue.

Are you on a schedule to be there at a certain time? Or are you required to show up at the drop of a dime? If you are on a schedule then it should not make a difference, you just need to leave for work a half hour earlier. Your move is your responsibility and you will need to adjust for the extra drive time. If you are supposed to come over just when he calls, then you really should say something because that could affect your employment. Don't let this go because that could cause major issues when this could have been resolved with a simple conversation.

    Good luck!

I assume that it is a condition of employment you be within a certain distance of your employment? Assuming that to be the case, you should inform him immediately in person. Indicate your desire to renegotiate your work relationship. It is the professional and best way to deal with the situation.

If it is not a condition of employment, what business is it of his how far you are from your job?

  • Of course, tell your boss in person.

    It's what adults do.

    Good luck.
