How do you convert derived units?

Test tomorrow, and no clue how. I need to do things like

    100cm=1m

    1000mm=1m

    10mm=1cm

    1000m=1km

    60seconds=1minute

    60minutes=1hour

    (60)(60)sec=3600sec=1hr

    it is important you know these

    basics. Now to convert them

    consider

    100km/hr is how many m/s

    if we want km gone and m instead

    we multiply by reciprocals,

    remember (ab)/b=a

    we do like that

    so

    (100km/1hr) x (1000m/1km)

    is the same as multiplying by 1

    because 1000m=1km

    so km's cancels out and we have

    (100 x 1000)m/1hr

    now we have to change the hour

    to seconds.

    ((100 x 1000)m/1hr) x (1hr/3600s)

    the hr cancels out and we're left

    (100 x1000)m/3600s = 1000m/36s

    that is about 28(m/s)

    for your specific question

    (4.5cm^2/hr) x (100 mm^2/cm)

    the 100mm^2 comes from

    (10mm)^2=100mm^2

    we then have

    (450mm^2/hr) x (1hr/3600s)

    I hope this helps

    How To Convert Derived Units

  • 1 decade ago

    4.5 cm^2/hour *100 mm^2/1cm^2*hour/60 min*min.60seconds

    100 mm squared equals 1 cm squared because

    1000 mm are in 1 kilometer

    100 cm are in 1 kilometer

    1000^2mm/100^2cm= 100
