If the seat belt is not used, then the body flies forward at the impact speed, hitting the airbag that is inflating towards you at 200 mph, and you will, at the least, receive severe facial injuries. You may also receive other injuries to the lower body because the body will slide forward under the airbags.

For the most part no they don't work together because they both have separate responsibilites. However, there is one similarity they both share protecting the lives of people who get into car accidents. However, you need both of them in order to give you maximum protection. If your safety belt is not on and your airbag is and you hit something going more than 15 MPH the airbag will deploy, no questions asked. The airbag protects your head from going through the windsheild in a car accident. If you are not wearing your seatbelt you can be very easily ejected out of your car which will in turn cause you to get hit by another car causing immediate death. Vice versa if you are wearing your seatbelt but you don't have your airbag turned on then your head can still possibly go through a windsheild even though the belt locks immediatedly after you get into a car accident, but you can still hit the passenger, dashboard and other objects causing serious injury.

The air bag will work, just as it was designed to do. It will NOT do what seatbelts are designed to do. The airbag will not, for instance, prevent a driver or passenger from being thrown out of a car. The only thing that a front airbag is designed to do is prevent the driver from striking his head and chest against the steering wheel and the steering column. It prevents the passenger from slaming his face into the dashboard.
The two systems are designed to work together, to keep the people in the car as safe as possible.

The safety belt in most vehicles nowdays will actually retract
the instant and air bag is deployed thru pyrotechnics' and suck you into the seat momentarily while the bag deploys in 2 stages (Second generation air bags only) this all takes place so fast that you will not know it.... it is much better to have your safety belt on than not....good luck, be safe....

No. They are separate systems.
The air bag is known as a Supplementary Restraint System. The seat belt provides the best protection against traumatic injury in a collision and the air bag helps cushion against head trauma.
The air bag will not be AS effective if the seat belt is not used.
That's why it is called a Supplementary system, rather than a replacement system or back-up system.
