As a student...What topics do you think need to be addressed within your district's Abstinence program?

I am talking about a Drug & Sex Abstinence program (refraining from doing either, ir you are not sure what Abstinence means). Please be mature in your responses and answer as many as you wish. Thank you!!!

I agree with everyone that Abstinence really does not work BUT here in the state of Texas public schools are required to teach the program with more than 50% being about Abstinence. We are trying to be realistic and also teach about being responsible and having safe sex but we have to call it an Abstinence program because of state laws. That is why I am asking for opinions.

    Sure abstinence might work if the middle ages come back but I have reason to believe that it didnt work so well back then. People will have sex if they want and have the necessity to, people will do drugs if theyre curious enough and have them readily available.

    Prevention is always a helpful thing to teach, at least when it comes to drugs but trying to deny human nature will get you dug into it deeper.

    Safe sex is what needs to addressed and emphasized. I know lots of grown ups, parents, conservatives, religious fundies like to believe people have divine nature and can overcome whatever but if you're an adult im sure you know better...It's better to be safe than to assume a book and prayer and knowledge will simply keep someone from doing it.

    Girls need to learn about birth control and contraceptives as much as guys need to.

    As a mother of two daughters and an adoptee myself, I have already started educating my daughters on their bodies. My adoptive mother began educating me on both issues when I turned twelve.

    I don't think abstinence works. There was a young girl in Bowie, Texas who put her baby in a bag but was bleeding so bad that she had to call an ambulence. For a young woman to do that, I look at her family and community. We still continue to shame and blame young women over sex. Its very important for my daughters to understand their bodies. It kept me from getting pregnant before I was ready. I was an adult before I had sex.

    Have tons of information. Children are going to form their own opinions and if you are presenting the information in an interesting less authoritarian manner they are more likely to listen with open hears. Knowledge is power. All you can do is give them the information and allow them to make their own choices. They will do so anyway.

    The first topic should be birth control.

    Abstinence is great but extremely unrealistic.

    Children must be made aware of the precautions to prevent pregnancy and disease.

    Birth control prevents abortions.

    but we do have assembly in school sometimes about that.
