Why does Yahweh deserve worship (read details)?

Don't answer if you are not interested in an intellectual discussion.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a believer, but why does Yahweh deserve praise?

In ages past he had to speak to Israel in very direct ways via messengers, prophets, or simply direct. He gave some real tangible rewards for our faithful service in the old days.

Now we get squat or better yet, some unforseen future in paradise if you accept the new testament as ultimate truth.

By the way, the only thing very reliable in the new testament would be the synoptic gospels.

Why do Jews and Christians alike worship Yahweh (who sometimes is mistakenly equated with Jesus) when there are so many other deities to worship.

Yahweh doesn't even talk to his people any more. It's like he forgot about us.

Why does he deserve praise?

Update:

Again, I am believer - however just because I believe doesn't mean I shouldn't ask questions.

Why else do we have a mind?

Update 2:

Synoptic is reliable in reference to the new testament. The old testament stands on it own.

I think he does deserve praise from those He does talk to (and I do believe He does talk to some people... but in an abstract way, rather than directly as displayed in the Bible). I see him as a God among other Gods and not The Only God, though at one time I was a Yahwist myself. I believe the writings of the Bible are biased and directly from the viewpoints of the writers themselves and not Absolute Truth. No more than I think any "Myths" written about other Gods are Absolute Truth. Gleening the Truth from the writings themselves, there is a sense of Justice and Mercy - but like I said, man wrote them from their own bias, so it is hard to actually sift through the BS and get to the truth of the matter. I have respect for the God, but no worship... I do not put my trust/faith in Yahweh... but I also do not believe Yahweh created a fiery hell of which he's going to put all those who don't put faith in him to burn for eternity... That is definitely a power hungry man who promotes such ideas... and not an All-Powerful God.

We shouldn't be placing mankinds writings about any Gods as equal to those Gods. We are not perfect... and from the writings themselves, neither are the Gods (even Yahweh repented a few times... that should tell you something).

Well, I would say he deserves praise because he made everything.

The book of Job is about how belief in Yahweh shouldn't be about getting rewards or avoiding punishment.

I agree that New Testament is questionable, and do not believe there is a Hell or a "paradise" Heaven. I feel these are misunderstandings of the Bible.

Only when one tries to walk the way of Yahweh does the reason he deserves praise become apparent. That is what all that faith talk is about. You can't see it until you are there.

Tangible rewards aren't really worth much if you think about it. An understanding that we are here to make ourselves into the best people we can be through his guidance, of our own free will (no one is making you, or going to punish you), is why I think praise is deserved. It is a thing so fulfilling that it cannot be described.

As for the messengers, prophets, or direct communication, I am not sure that these aren't still happening. Perhaps, in the old days they were never talked to directly, but understood that life itself and the meanings we get from it were the communications all along. Dreams help too.

Actually Catholic Crusader, is wrong on several points. 1. The New Catholic Encyclopedia states: “The formulation ‘one God in three Persons’ was not solidly established, certainly not fully assimilated into Christian life and its profession of faith, prior to the end of the 4th century. But it is precisely this formulation that has first claim to the title the Trinitarian dogma. Among the Apostolic Fathers, there had been nothing even remotely approaching such a mentality or perspective.”—(1967), Vol. XIV, p. 299. The Apostolic Fathers didn't teach anything remotely approaching a trinity or that Jesus was equal to God. 2. Most of the verse he quotes in Rev. apply to Jehovah and not Jesus. But since Jesus is the exact representation (copy) of his God and Father, (Rev 1:6) It isn't surprising that they share similar titles. (Heb 1:3, 2 Cor 4:4, Col 1:15) 3. To read John 8:58 as 'I am' is to use improper english. You can not mix tenses in English as you can in Greek. The question to Jesus was 'how old are you?' not what is your name. Also if Jesus was quoting Ex 3:14, he would have said 'The Being' not I am. Because that is the translation of Ex 3:14 into Greek. (Septugint bible) “I SHALL PROVE TO BE WHAT I SHALL PROVE TO BE.” Heb., היהא רשׁא היהא (’Eh·yeh′ ’Asher′ ’Eh·yeh′), God’s own self-designation; Leeser, “I WILL BE THAT I WILL BE”; Rotherham, “I Will Become whatsoever I please.” Gr., E·go′ ei·mi ho on, “I am The Being,” or, “I am The Existing One”; and This is just a few of the points. .

Because He is holy. Sure, there may be other reasons, but this one tops the list. There is not one thing in this entire universe that is perfect, save for God. And yet we are made perfect through Jesus Christ.

Now you claim to be a believer yet you say only the synoptic gospels are reliable. Does that mean we can't trust the words of the prophets, the very same messengers God sent to the Israelites? I say you either accept the whole bible or reject the whole bible. You cannot pick and choose.

God dose talk to me and every believer. If you can't hear Him, perhaps you are not who you say you are.

My answer, first through the words of Augustine (about a personal God):

“Either God cannot abolish evil, or he will not; if he cannot then he is not all-powerful; if he will not then he is not all-good.”

Of course, Augustine did not allow for the possibility (explicitly) that God is only indifferent, or nonexistant.

Regardless, I do not believe he (or she or it) is deserving of praise.

Furthermore, I see no reason to thank God for its creation of me, if that is the way things are; if God exists and created me then it did so of its own volition and perhaps for its own interests. I see no reason to thank a being for that.

To be clear, I am agnostic and live my life as a practical atheist. As a trained cosmologist I have a better sense of the science behind the 'origins of the universe' than most and I see NO reason why a creator-God hypothesis should be rejected on the basis of evidence (or lack of). Instead, it should be rejected on the logical basis that it is not a falsifiable hypothesis and therefore serves no purpose whatsoever.

Good question. I think you need to distinguish between jews who worship Yahweh and christians who worship Jehovah and Jesus.

For jews Yahweh was their god who did things for them while other gods were doing things for other tribes. Hence the "no other gods before me" commandment. In this sense, of Yahweh as the god of the jews and the jews as Yahweh's chosen people, one could argue that the restoration of Israel and its triumphs in recent wars are arguments in favor of worshiping Yahweh. Still, you are right that he doesn't seem to be talking (directly or through prophets) like he used to.

The christian worship of Jehovah is a total mystery. Essentially he walked around for a few years and spoke to a few people and then vanished. Since then he has provided no clearcut demonstration of his existence - not even a little burning bush (unless a babbling Bush counts).

  • He doesn't, unless you want to worship a mythical tribal volcano deity.

Yah (Ex. 15:2) or Yahweh was originally a volcano god, a god of thunder, lightning, and earthquakes who often manifested himself in fire (viz. the burning bush). He is generally thought to have been an amalgam of a number of Mediterranean gods and goddesses, beginning with the original Yahuwah (a mountain goddess) and including El, Yayash, Yaë, Shaddai, Enlil, Seth, Anu, Marduk, Yahu, Ea, and even En-ki. His consort — worshipped in the Fertile Crescent for centuries before Yah/Yahweh came along — was Asherah.

With all due respect, you are trying to have God be God on your terms. There is more evidence for the existence of Christ than there is for Plato, Emperor Nero and may others.

After the prophets foretold of Christ, He came to earth in fulfillment of prophecy. Remember what He told Thomas before He ascended into heaven? More blessed are they that have not seen Him, yet believed. That means that you and I are more blessed believing in the Living Message. That is why it's all about faith. (Faith is the evidence of things not seen.)

Does God deserve praise for redeeming us, giving us eternal life and showering us with His unlimited rewards and blessings? You bet!

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that save a wretch like me.

Faith my friend, without faith one cannot do anything, I have faith that my god is and was the almighty, and if he does not want to speak straight forward he does not have to, I am not great enough to say he does not deserve my worship. I am the creation, and he is the creator

Maybe because He is Creator of all? That YOU wouldnt be here without HIM?

He talks to me every single day when I read His word the Holy Bible.
