Where can I find a free doula?

We have 2 small children already and my husband will have to spend his time watching them. He will be coming and going with them during the birth because we have no one who will watch them. Because of this, I would love to find a doula to help me. But we are low-income and cannot afford to pay for one. I'm looking for a free one (I don't care if she's brand new or still in-training). I mostly just want someone to be there with me so I'm not alone. :)

Update:

Lucia, that stinks. We will be moving just north of Milwaukee right after the baby is born! Right now we are in Western Washington, south of Seattle. I would have loved to have you there. Thanks for the offer!

Thanks so much for everyone's advice so far! You're so helpful. :)

I was going to answer your question earlier and offer to help you but I thought there was no way you were in the same state as I so I put your question on my watchlist. Lo and behold, we do live in the same state! I live in Olympia and I would love to help you if you need it. I am currently taking my Pre req's for Nursing, I hope to go on to Seattle Midwifery School after completing the RN program at SPSCC and become a Certified Nurse Midwife. I am not a trained Doula (yet- I plan on taking the course next summer) but I have personally gone through the birth process twice so I am rather familiar with it...lol. Please email me if I can help you in any way. You can also contact Seattle Midwifery School, they should be able to connect you with a doula in training. Or any of the local midwives may be able to help you find someone. Good Luck!

You could start by phoning some non-profit agencies or looking on the internet.Lots of doulas love to volunteer just to get experience and especially if they are still going for thier certification which they have to have 3 birth experiences. You can check out the DONA website. If you live in Edmonton,AB. I would be able to help you.Don't hesitate to phone any doula no matter what her costs are and negotiate with her as most of them are not doing it for the money as they just love to help other woman have a wonderful birthing experience which is the most important thing. Most of them will be very lenient.

Your best bet would be to see if you have a birth network. Contact local midwives and ask if they know of anybody that would be able to help you. This is kinda funny though because I am trying to become a doula or apprentice midwife and I just offered an expecting mother my services for free. Do you mind me asking what state you are in? Wanted to add that if you are in the middle Tennessee area that I would be more than willing to assist

An option for low cost or free doula care is to look into local hospital doula programs. I don't know of anywhere else you can find them.

Good luck and Congratulations on #3!

If you are in Milwaukee, I would love to be present to help you through your labor. I am a trained Birth Doula (DONA), Perinatal Health Educator and I have attended 20+ deliveries.
