For Bible Scholars, 'What' dies in the 'Second Death'?

Well you got lots of answers, theories, and interpretations. However applying Occam's razor (the simplest answer is probably the most correct) we look at what we know.

1)God is love 1John 4:16

2)We (who for the most part are not love) would not choose to punish someone we love forever (eternally in fire) just because they chose not to love us. However if it made them uncomfortable in the extreme to live with us we might just let them go. We certainly are not better than God.

If it is determined by in the judgment of God and his saints that a person would not be happy living eternally in their environment they are released and forgotten. If God forgets you you never existed.

Everyone is created a spiritual being, they have a body and possess a mind. When Adam sinned and committed high treason against God, his spirit and mind was defiled and Satan was able to have access to his spirit causing him to torn between both good and evil. God sent Jesus to die and by His death, mankind is now able to be cleansed from this sin and by being reborn, the believer's spirit becomes just as pure and holy and righteous as Christ Himself is. This is the reason why Paul wrote and said for us to walk in the spirit and not fulfill the desires or the lust of our sinful nature but consider us dead to sin and alive unto righteousness. But those who are not reborn, their spirit is defiled and contaminated by sin and they can not enter Heaven with God. As a matter of fact, When a person dies without Christ, their spirit goes straight to hell and there they will remain until the end of the 1000 year reign of Christ on this earth and afterward they will stand before God only to be judged and found "Guilty" because their names are not in the book of life (Revelation 20:15) and cast alive in the lake of fire..Which is the second death, forever separated from Almighty God This is why the unconditional love of Christ must not be rejected but willingly received and those who do, will not meet this fate...

The Kabbalah says, it is when we shed our heavier spiritual body or soul, and become pure spirit. I'm not sure I agree.

I personally feel there is such a thing as spiritual death. It isn't taught because some would get foolish ideas like, "Well I got chance after chance to get it right, so I can goof off now." Or

"Well, if I'm going to die it doesn't matter." But I believe one can abuse their Free Will to the point they become so wicked, God will cut them off form other Lifeforms and Realities.

Hells are not permanent places. The Lake of Fire is the everlasting place. It's like a Cosmic Recycler. And there I think beings suffer terribly until they give up thier will to survive. It's not the death of their spiritual essence. Thier energy so to speak. But the end of their individual personality.

The second death is the final death, after judgment. Adamic death is the first death. After a person dies the first death, when judgment comes, their souls are judged and if not found worthy, they endure the second and final death.

Revelation deals with this topic.

"But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

"Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire."

I am going to bypass all of your brilliant word juggling and tell you . The first death is the death of the body you are in now. The second death is the death of your eternal body /soul/spirit body. Just because you don't accept Christ as your savior does not mean that you don't have a spirit body waiting in heaven for your soul to be put into. It is written that at death the soul goes back to Him that created it. and it goes into that spirit body. And at the great white throne judgment those that have not accepted the salvation offered to them will be cast body and soul into the lake of fire.

The second death is the final spiritual death—being cut off from righteousness and denied a place in any kingdom of glory (see Alma 12:32; D&C 88:24).

Also, it means being cut off from the presence of God forever.

In Revelation 20 :14-15 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.This is the 2nd death.

15.And whososever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

So you need to have Jesus in your heart now b4 its too late.Accept him Now!!!

The second death is in the lake of fire.those who did not accepted Jesus in their heart as their saviour and their name is not in the book of life their souls will be casts to the lake of fire.

For the people who don't believe, there is only one death and sadly they will not spend eternity with God, they will spend it with Lucifer.
