"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded..."?

Does this quote from James Madison ring true today or is it an old truth from our Revolution?

"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes...known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. . . No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

- James Madison, Political Observations, 1795

As accurate today as it was in 1795, and I think some would do well to study history before they continue to beat their war drums. It seems that with every chance the President and the rubber-stamp congress that was voted out last year and to a lesser extent the current one even are willing to limit liberty in the name of safety. Ben Franklin said it well: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety". Safety is never permanent and is by its very nature nearly impossible to preserve by any means when facing a determined foe. Liberty however is easily lost, but just as easily preserved as long as we stand up for our constitution and the freedom provided therein.
