Barrera's boxing short - why is it named Tapia?

So far all of them are right, i'm Mexican myself so here's the answer. Hispanics (not just Mexicans) do take both of their parents lat name. Typically the mothers last name appears before the fathers last name, and in American culture, only the fathers name is taken, if he were American than his name would be Marco Antonio Tapia but from my understanding, it was his mother who raised him so he chose to use Barrera instead of Tapia, although he still does honor his farher by using that name on his trunks.

I believe Tapia is the maiden name of Barrera's mother. It has nothing to do with the boxer Johnny Tapia, as some believe.

Gary is right. In hispanic culture usually a person takes both names of the parents and since he has taken the name of his father when he fights -- Barrera -- he honors his mother with Tapia on his shorts.
