nhra drag racing?
Why is it that nhra has more members, more tracks, and more active racers than nascar but does not seem to have nearly as large of a fan base.
I am an nhra member & racer, I also like watching nascar.

Drag racing does not translate well on TV. You have to be there to experience it.
Lots of Nascar fans have never been to a race and are fans solely because of TV coverage.

Nhra has more classes for the average people on a budget to compete in. Nascar has many classes which are not widely known, but it takes a lot of money to get a car to be competitive. The Nhra has index or bracket racing that anyone can get in and be competitive but require you to be a member to earn points and such. Index racing isn't as exciting as a race with 40 something cars running side by side to the fans. I love bracket racing, but it can get rather boring watching it live.

Good point. I've been a member of NHRA as well as AHRA years ago. I still attend drag races as opposed to seeing NASCAR live.
I first worked at a gas station when I was 14, the owner had a hot rod, '32 Ford with no top, '48 flathead with trip carbs.
I was hooked ever since.
I believe it is a fairly unknown sport. Although it gets sold out at PIR and other tracks.

I love drag racing. Much better in person like some of the previous answers were. My family and I bracket race which is much harder to understand how to do than what the professional's do. It is awesome to see the speed and acceleration that happens in just a few seconds. You can't get that with nascar. Around my area, drag racing is a big hit especailly to the younger generation. It is able to give a chance to mainly anyone eight years old and up. It is a rush and a fantastically dangerous sport. Once you try drag racing you are hooked.

I would definately like to see a drag racing section. Maybe not specific to just nhra, just a general drag racing section.

Because you can drag race anything thanks to bracket racing. It's cheap and you can drag race a nice car on a Saturday night and take it to a car show Sunday morning. I do as much as possible.
You can pay your twenty bucks on a test and tune night and see what your new Mustang GT or old Mini Van will do in the 1/4 mile!
Basically, more people can easily compete in drag racing because you can start in any car and take it as far as you want to go.
Nascar and the prerequisite Dirt Tracks REQUIRES a "Race Car" and a Trailer and a Truck etc. etc. to compete.
I've helped a friend run a dirt car in Pro Stock in his final season from building it from a frame to prepping and pitting for a complete season and it's pretty damn hard. You HAVE to have sponsor's because you basically build a car expecting it to get wrecked half the time.
The coolest part of building it was hanging the body using an actual rivet gun from the old St. Louis(wentzville) Corvette assembly plant that put together 100's or 1000,s of 'Vette's. His uncle drove a dump truck that helped clean the plant out and he grabbed some really cool stuff. Just using that rivet gun awed me and I felt kinda honored.

I've been drag racing with my family since I was literally 2 weeks old. I've been there for A.H.R.A as well as IHRA, UDRA, and IHRA( I am now 37). Drag racing is a sport that you NEED TO BE THERE FOR! Its not just a quick buzz in a turn. The smells, the feel of being pelted with rubber, the electricity that goes through your body as they burn out past you. There are so many categories now it is pretty much open for all. Nascar, 1 category, 1 class. If you cant afford it? tough? drag racing- dragsters, funny cars, bikes, street cars, diesel trucks, snowmobiles, jet cars, golf cart races, etc. It is open to many people of all financial backgrounds. I am the coordinator for the Chicago Wise guys match race circuit. 6 & 7 second cars of all makes and models. Blower, nitrous, twin turbo, and straight up horsepower! We even accomplish half track full burnouts. Check us out at www.chicagowiseguys.com to see some real racing action!!!

tv dosent do nhra any justice, it dont look like they are going 300 on tv, the coverage on espn2 this time of year might be on as scheduled, depending on a game going long it might not be on at all, this upsets me and i think nhra should demand a better tv time slot, i am a college football fan and if the game goes long it should be showed till the end, but i get mad when it happens, asscar is nothin but million dollar whiners in my book, it used to be fantastic now i could careless, ihra coverage on speed is not that good but at least its on tv, i agree that you need to experience nhra, ihra in person ,the fumes noise you cant get on tv and i think maybe a little less chatter from the tv people actually might help, but i think paul page suks, so do like i do, i take as many nitro virgins as you can to a drag race and watch their face as they experience the greatest thing on the planet, long live drag racing, fire paul page, MIKE DUNN for president!!

I have to agree with some of the other answers, going to a NHRA race is 10 times better than watching a NASCAR race in person. Watching Nascar on TV is alot easier.

Drag racing is far better in person than on TV. NASCAR can be just as good either way. As for the members part anyone can compete in some level of drag racing in any car that is safe. You don't to spend tons of money to make your car super fast. They have classes for real fast cars, slower cars, bracket racing, etc. You name it there is a class for it. Oval track racing requires special cars that meet your local track class rules in addition to being safe which can make it more expensive.
