Baby Powder???

I have 2 kids and never used baby powder.. I remember the pediatrician at the hospital telling me not to, but I can't remember why.. I have a friend who just had a baby and I'd like to give her some medical research as to why she shouldn't use it.. I do know that it attracts yeast, but is there anything else?? Thanks in advance!! :)

Update:

if you can give me a website with the details that would be great!!

Baby powder is made from talc, a mineral which "grows" next to asbestos in the ground. you seldom find one without the other.

The major alternative is cornstarch, which can feed a yeast infection.

Better to not use powder at all.

I can't really say anything about the whole baby powder thing...but if she wants to use it to help prevent diaper rash...she could always put diaper rash ointment on the baby at every/every other changing...my little girl will be 4 months in a week, and she sleeps through the night, so I just use some Johnson's and Johnson's diaper rash ointment on her...and she still has yet to get a diaper rash...hope that helped!!

Don't use baby powder. It's full of chemicals which are really bad for baby's skin. The talc itself contains asbestiform fibers (see link below for more info) which are a known carcinogen.

If you are looking for something to keep the area dry, use cornstarch. Or better yet, keep her undiapered for a bit and let her dry out naturally.

    talc and cancer risks: http://www.preventcancer.com/consumers/cosmetics/t...

there are some powders that are only corn starch... but in baby's fold - especially girl's labia it can cause more irritation than prevent it.

I can't find the details, but talc or corn starch powders have a lot of dust that flies in the air... an accumulation of inhaling these -even the safer corn starch version can cause some respitory issues.

It has talc in it. Talc can get in the baby's lungs; it can be irritating.

I had 4 kids and never used it either. It makes absolutely no difference in keeping diaper rash away.

Baby powder contains Talc which when inhaled can stick to the lungs and cause the baby to suffucate.

you're not supposed to use talcum powder, b/c it sticks to the inside of the lungs.. you can use cornstarch baby powder tho.
