Fishin' folklore has it that it be the old Muskellunge aka Muskie (pronunciation for the illiterate, as in myself ;) ). But personally I think it be the Steelhead, with some alteration "Fish of a SORE Arm Castin' ;). Nope, ain't ever caught a Muskie, but a Steelie, well that be a totally different story;) ;) ;)...

The fish that I know of that is known as the fish of a thousand casts is a muskellunge. I have never caught a pure fish but have hooked and landed several tiger muskies fishing in WI and MN. Fishing for them tends to follow the adage big bait for big fish. I have caught them both with artificial baits and live baits. I have caught them with inline spinners such as Mepps and Bluefox also with Suicks. Live bait has been large suckers attached to a quick strike rig. When I say large I mean 12-16' suckers specially ordered from a bait dealer.

As the old saying goes (MUSKIE)
but to me a fish of a thousand cast woud be some kind of trophy, one you don't catch every day or maybe once a year.
Like a 10 lb bass, or a 30 lb catfish, something fairly rare.

That's a Muskie!
Yes I have caught a few while bass fishing LMAO.
We have two lakes here in Kentucky with Muskie in them, Green River Lake, and Cave Run Lake.
I have caught 3 Muskie while bass fishing Cave run, two on spinner baits and one on a crank bait. Lost a real big one due to bass fishing and did not have a wire leader on.

We fish and catch muskie all the time here in NW Pa and believe me it doesnt take 1000 casts to catch one either. We see every year several over 50" and into the 30lb range.

The Muskie. Never caught one, I ve only caught Tiger Muskies, and it does hold true, its a thousand casts.

I guess it's a Musky, but I immed thought you were talking about catching Permit on a fly.
Hell, after 30 casts in a 10 knot wind your arm FEELS like it's been casting 1000 times! (lol)

I have had one hit and that thousand casts is a severe understatement.
No, I have never landed a muskie. They will occasionally scarf a bass lure in a couple of lakes here. The bass fishermen have fun but almost never land any.
