This is my favorite question!!! yay!

Alright so first chose your guitar... electric you say??? DO NOT GET A SQUIER!!! even if you just want to mess around on it.. its made of plywood literally.. although it says fender squier.. its one of the worse guitars you could own.. same with the gibson epiphones.. don't be tricked! they are cheap cheap cheap! but horrible! and you can't get anywhere with them...

a good guitar to get would be an OLP.. its a new brand but has great sound for an entry level mess around electric... they run around 200$ for the cheapest but are actually made of wood... ibanez's are also pretty good for beginning as well.. try that out.

Things you need for your guitar..

    * a cord.. ( or two depending on what you want to do)

    * A small amp ( amp brand doesn't matter too much if you are just beginning the guitar matters way more)

    * picks ( just go with what feels comfortable)

    * some sort of case ( not required but good if you don't want your guitar toppling over!

    * a pedal is optional.. your guitar will sound great and even grungy and metal like if you want without one ( when i first started playing guitar I didn't know this) you just mess with the settings on the amp... but if you get a pedal i don't recommend a digitec unless you want some wacky sounds... and get the upper end pedal which could cost as much as 120$ boss pedals are the best.. remember you don't NEED a pedal i would wait until you get better..

    * to learn really all you need is the internet. you can get guitar tabs for free... and instructions.....

good luck! and if you have any questions ask me!!!

also.. little guitar shops tend to sell cheaper.. or i'm sure you can find a cheap guitar on craigslist or ebay if you want to go that route it all depends good luck!

  • Let me start by saying beware of any package deal as they are usually lousy guitars, and the amps are rubbish. For a guitar buy the Yamaha Pacifica, its probably the best introductory guitar ever. Then Buy a 15 watt Marshal amp and a Dan Electro overdrive foot-pedal. The whole lot should cost you about £350 And if you go second hand you could knock £50 off that price.

Also get a subscription to the Total Guitar magazine - or another guitar tuition magazine - to help you learn how to play it.

    Hope that helps.

If you were meaning what 'else' do you have to buy, the answer would be an amplifier for the guitar, These range in price from almost nothing to 10's of thousands to fill a concert hall. To connect the guitar - a guitar lead is needed and you're away! If you wanted to play in public you might need a power supply for the amp or a smaller battery-powered one. Have fun!

Obviously the guitar, an amplifier, a jack (cord), guitar picks, a guitar tuner, sound pedals, guitar stand, a case to keep your axe in.

Fender makes a nice Stratocaster knock off (made in China or Japan) that is great...unless you want a real one then, whew, big money. Peavey also makes several nice electric guitars in all price ranges. Peavey also makes great amps. The king of amps of course is Marshall. Get a good jack, ask the salesperson for a really good one. Pay big money if you have to. A crappy cord will drive you crazy with its buzzing, breaking up, etc. Pedals are optional, but if you want to play with special effects, its the way to go. An electronic guitar tuner is a really nice thing to have to keep yourself in tune and they work great. Enjoy your guitar.

I can't believe people are telling you "so and so" is a bad deal. Look, you are just starting out , right? SO, i don't want to offend anyone and have my answer deleted , so i won't mention any brand names - but what you need basically is a starter guitar , a small amplifier , guitar cord , picks , book , strap , etc. THAT can all be had in a relatively inexpensive entry level package! Mind you - if i knew you had a budget for a $1.200 Gibson guitar , and a $1,500 amplifier , i would suggest THAT, but you (as i) realize you're in the real world....
