Would you like to see Nascar change rear wings?

With all the driver complaints about not seeing out the rear window, do you think it would be smart for Nascar to use Superbird style rear wings that are about level with the roof at Talladega and Daytona? I think it would be cool to see and safer for the drivers.

Yesterday Michael Waltrip said that he didn't have any problems with seeing out through the cars. But it would be cool to see cars with superbird style wings again.

Not a bad Q. I never gave the thought of the superbird wing. It's been awhile since I seen that on the track. I'm not sure how it would work though. It would be almost impossible to repair with just about any back into the wall type wreck or spin.

M.W. said he couldn't see out of the old car any better than the COT. I personally don't believe a thing he says anyway. The majority of the drivers said the view out the back and the view through the back was very bad. They talked about making the wicker bill see through but I don't see what just that inch would help.

Like Jr said he was wearing white gloves in hopes that would help the guys behind him see his signals.

I guess if they raise it lets say 8 to 10 inches that might be enough if they can get it steady enough to with stand the force.

Tina the light thing I don't think would work because you would have some drivers using it as a decoy and then NASCAR would get their fine makers and rulebook writer involved and we all know how messed up that can be when NASCAR holy than thou team gets involved it things.

Actually this topic entered my mind during the race at Talladega. I don't think it is really necessary to have to redesign the wing. Basically what the drivers are complaining about is being able to see when another driver gives a hand signal before heading to pit road or moving down the track. I think there is a simple solution. They could design a "raised mold in the roof" that could encase a light or a series of different color lights that could be used to warn the other drivers behind them if there was a problem or they needed to pit.

My fantasy suggestion is to get rid of the COT all together! It is ridiculous looking and as a fan since 1991, I just can't accept it....

My realistic suggestion is to manufacture the wing out of clear Lexan or some other type of rigid clear/semi-clear material. The angle may slightly distort what is seen through it but you could at least see the drivers making a signal.

It doesn't surprise me that Mikey had no problem with it as is. He seems to be NASCAR's driver puppet. He loves the COT, loves the Chase Format, hell, he would even applaud changing the direction that the cars run if that is what NASCAR told him to do.... I was a fan of Mikey's but it is getting tougher and tougher to like him anymore.

I don't know how that would work out when a car gets spun backwards at 190+ mph. They do need to do something different with the rear wing for both safety and visibility reasons on the super speedway cars. Whether that's changing the height, angle or wing material itself I don't know but I'm sure they will be looking into their options.

Bring on the Superbird wing . I think it would look so cool. The drivers would be able see then.

Great question Jay. They need to improve visability for sure. A taller wing or going back to the spoiler would be good. I am not sure how the old superbird wing would look, it is certainly dated to another era.

Thats a good idea, but technologically more advanced would actually be a panoramic rearview mirror with an alternative viewing angle, supllied by camera or mirrored imagery. And you could use the regular mirrors in case of vehicle damage. There's other ways to solve this issue, but I don't want to get too technical in a public forum.

Something needs to be done with those wings. The hand signals are all too important not to be seen,so this is a short side of the COT at Talladega.

I think raising the wing just a few inches would be a good idea. It is a problem the way it is on any track. We have to be practical about it, because we are stuck with it. Otherwise, I would agree that they should get rid of it altogether.
