    4y+6 - (y+8) = 3y - (4y+6)

    4y+6 - y -8 = 3y -4y - 6

    3y - 2 = - y - 6

    4y = -4

    y = -1

    example

    a, 2a, 3a

    the difference, d in the arithmetic seq can be found by

    substracting 1st term from the 2nd term

    3a - 2a = 2a -a

    y=-1

    For an arithmetic sequence the difference in terms is the same, say x

    Therefore (y+8)-(4y+6)=x and (4y+6)-3y=x

    solving both equations gives y= -1

    Check

    y+8=7, 4y+6=2, 3y=-3 and the constant difference between terms is 5

    [(y + 8) + 3y]/2 = 4y + 6

    4y + 8 = 8y + 12

    -4 = 4y

    -1 = y

    7, 2, -3
