long crank time on old jeeps is fuel pressure bleedoff almost 100% of the time. if you don't have access to a fuel pressure gauge, try cycling the key on and off a few times before you start it. if it starts right up, that's what it was. its nothing to worry about. it will never hurt anything.

Actually I really would not worry about one or two seconds. I am around 98% sure it is taking that time for the fuel pressure to build up and could be slightly longer after sitting all night. There is a check valve in the pump that after time get old and begin to leak. This allows fuel to drain back to the tank with the engine off.

Want to find out? See if you can borrow a fuel pressure gauge from say Auto zone or similar. ENGINE OFF, connect it to the shcrader test port on the fuel rail. Stand back away from those spinning things under the hood and have an assistant try to start the engine. What I think you will see, is that there will be little to know pressure while cranking at first then the fuel pressure comes up and the engine starts.

1-2 seconds...would not worry about it.

    Good Luck

PS Oh, yes, remove the pressure gauge.ENGINE OFF AND COOL. Clean or wipe to dry any spilled fuel before trying to restart. Engine compartment fires are not a good thing.

it can be a number of things. Check for spark. Check fuel pump for a humming sound. If the fel pmp[ isn't workin the most comon problem on these is the Inertia switch failing. Try resetting it (the inertia switch is located in the cargo area behind one of the acces panles sualy on the driver side, refer to your hains manuel.) If the switch fails to reset un plug it and run a jumper wire between the two contacts in the harness. If truck still fails to start and fuel pump isn't runnig check fuses and fuel pump relay. If you aren't getting spark you need a new crank shaft position sensor. these are spendy and hard to replace. with out actualy being there it is hard for me to tell exactly what the cause is. Try talking to your local mechanic they would know of some other common problems to look into

It is just fine all Jeep Cherokees do that. Mine does and there is nothing wrong with it and my Uncle has a Cherokee and so does my friends dad and his dad and all of them do that so trust me it is just fine there is nothing to worrier about.

FIRST CHECK THE BATTERY CABLES THEN TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.
