Tartan is a plaid print. The colors and pattern varies according to family tradition.

A Tartan is a type of plaid weave usually in wool, used for making Scotish Kilts. http://www.tartanstore.net/browse/mens-wear/kilts/...
The print can also be seen in golf clothing, madras printed fabric and as part of the logo for Scotch Tape.

It depends. My tartan is royal blue, green, purple, with a line of gold. This is my family Tartan from Scotland.
