I have been on Topamax for several years. I take it for chronic pain and not migraines, although it did stop mine. When I first started taking the Topamax I had the same side effects as you described. I had the tingling in my hands and also in my feet. It takes a little bit of time for your body to get used to the drug and then the tingling does stop. Sometimes it does come back when the dosage is increased, but not as bad as when you are first put on the medication. I do have some memory issues also, but whether or not it is from the medication or the disease process that I have , I do not know. I do know that the medication works very well for me. Another side effect that I did have from the Topamax is weight loss. It does not happen to everyone, but can happen. I do know of many people who take this medication who have had the same side-effects and they say the same thing about the tingling. Do not worry too much about it. If you are concerned about it, it never hurts to let your doctor know about any side-effects that you are having. It is better to be on the safe side. They usually start off on a low dose of it and work their way up as your body gets used to it, until you get the results that you are looking for or until the side-effects are too much. Good luck and I hope it works for you. For me, the med is a Godsend.

I started taking Topamax for migraines a few months ago and I went through the same side effects that you are going through.
The tingling in your hands and feet are normal and you may notice it in your face once your dose is increased. Typically you start taking 25mg one week, 50mg second week, 75 mg third week, then 100mg from that point on. The word searching will go away after a while but it will be frustrating when you can't think of a simple word. Someone else mentioned weight loss - this is VERY true. I prescribe this medicine for weight loss all the time. In fact I've even lost 50+ lbs since I've been on it. Also, sodas might start to taste funny to you like they are flat or metallic tasting.....just another side effect of the Topamax (or dope-a-max).
I hate this drug with a passion because I had to give up a lot but I was having migraines everyday and I had an enlarged vein in my brain so it's a small price to pay to stay alive. Just try to out for a while.
Don't get discouraged about not remembering things. In time it will go away. I promise you that.

Before taking this medicine
You should not use Topamax if you are allergic to topiramate.
To make sure Topamax is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- glaucoma or other eye problems;
- diabetes, or a history of metabolic acidosis;
- kidney disease, a history of kidney stones, or if you are on dialysis;
- severe breathing problems;
- a history of mood problems, depression, or suicidal thoughts or actions;
- liver disease;
- soft or brittle bones (osteoporosis, osteomalacia);
- a growth disorder;
- if you take lithium; or
- if you are sick with diarrhea.
Some people have thoughts about suicide while taking an anticonvulsant. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using Topamax. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.
Topamax can increase the level of acid in your blood (metabolic acidosis). This can weaken your bones, cause kidney stones, or cause growth problems in children or harm to an unborn baby. You may need blood tests to make sure you do not have metabolic acidosis, especially if you are pregnant.
Do not start or stop taking Topamax during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Taking topiramate during pregnancy may increase the risk of cleft lip and/or cleft palate in the newborn. But having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both mother and baby. There may be other seizure medicine that can be more safely used during pregnancy.
Topamax can make birth control pills less effective. Use a barrier form of birth control (such as a condom or diaphragm with spermicide) to prevent pregnancy while taking Topamax. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment.
Topiramate can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

I started taking topamax for headaches and seizures, the doctor started me out on 100mg, I felt like I was about to die, seriously. I would take it at night and I had feelings of the bed spinning, like things were getting bigger, the next day I felt heavily drugged (out of it) and like I was going to vomit. My advice is try taking something else if the side effects don't ease up. I take diclofenac, it seems to work better but without the nasty side effects. Also for headache/migraine relief, try Excedrin tension headache with a strong cup of coffee, that works too. I have very bad headaches and migraines. Oh while you're waiting for the meds to kick in, take a very hot bath, as hot as you can stand it. From one migraine sufferer to another, God bless you. All the best, k

I have a friend who takes topamax, she has side effects of not remembering things and sometimes acts a little kooky...but her migraines have lessened!! She has been taking this for over a year and some of the side effects have lessened......in the beginning she acted intoxicated, slurred words, etc. she plans on trying to wean of the med and see if the cycle of migraines is broken. I guess for you it would depend on if you and the people around you can live with the side effects or the headaches.

I have been put on this recently and my doctor had told me that I may feel tingling in my fingers in toes. She had said because of acid or something but drinking orange juice helps a million. I have a hard time remembering to get orange juice so I have tingly fingers a lot. Especially since I got put on this back in March of 2014 and stopped and restarted a couple of weeks ago.

Definitely talk to your doctor. Maybe the dosage needs to be adjusted, or you need a different medicine altogether. The side effects of this drug can be serious. According to their website, some of the symptoms can fade in 3 weeks or so...on the other hand, they may be minimizing it to sell more Topomax! The second website I listed is more informative. Good luck!
