Why does "Slick Rudy" get away with constant lies and misstatements?

"Fred's Facts Check Out; Rudy's Don't

Summary

Former Sen. Fred Thompson got the facts straight for his GOP debate debut Oct. 9. But former Mayor Rudy Giuliani added to a lengthening string of exaggerations and misstatements:

Giuliani claimed Sen. Hillary Clinton once called the free-market economy "the most destructive force in modern America." She didn't say that. She quoted another author who said free markets were "disruptive." She also said free markets bring prosperity.

The mayor falsely claimed Clinton proposes to give $1,000 to "everybody." Her proposed subsidies to workers' retirement accounts would be for couples making up to $60,000 a year and would be $500 for those making up to $100,000.

Giuliani falsely claimed that more than 2 percent of the nation's gross domestic product is spent on "frivolous" lawsuits. The figure is from a study about the cost of all lawsuits."

Update:

Scarlett: Thanks for the quote. To me there is a big distinction between Rudy's implication that she made a blanket indictment of the free market. He significantly leaves out the word "unfettered". Huge difference. If we had an unfettered free market there'd be no restriction on the lead content of imported Chinese toys, for a single topical instance.

To display the dishonesty of what he is doing, a Hillary supporter could snip the quote to say that she said "a free market is the driving force behind our prosperity, our freedom in so many ways" and leave out the rest, which would be equally as valid as what he did.

This how and when she said it:

    From Clinton's March 3, 1996, interview on C-SPAN's Booknotes:

BRIAN LAMB (host): There's a quote here. I want to ask you if you agree with this. This is from Alan Ehrenhalt, author of "The Lost City" -- you put it in your book. "The unfettered free market has been the most radically disruptive force in American life in the last generation."

CLINTON: I believe that. That's why I put it in the book. I think if you look at the argument we've had in our political life in the last several years, it's been a false debate. We've pitted the government against everything else. Well, I don't believe the government has had as big an impact as commercial television, as a lot of the decisions made in the marketplace about how we're going to pay and compensate people, about downsizing corporations and making workers more insecure. And I just believe that there's got to be a healthy tension among all of our institutions in society, and that the market is the driving force behind our prosperity, our freedom in so many respects to make our lives our own but that it cannot be permitted just to run roughshod over people's lives as well.

So it really is a matter of semantics. Disruptive and destructive have similar meanings in many cases:

    Main Entry: dis·rupt

    Pronunciation: dis-'r&pt

    Function: transitive verb

Etymology: Latin disruptus, past participle of disrumpere, from dis- + rumpere to break -- more at REAVE

1 a : to break apart : RUPTURE b : to throw into disorder <agitators trying to disrupt the meeting>

2 : to interrupt the normal course or unity of

So Rudy did not lie, he impated very well the meaning of her statement even if he did not quote her word for word.

A Washington Post reporter was asked this question yesterday. She said the press has plenty of time to correct him later. At this stage, she said, they were just looking at the candidates in a general way. I thought this was an amazing answer considering that Rudy is way out in front and first impressions so often brand candidates.

"[Giuliani] hasn't been really challenged on every word yet. That will come. Right now, there are so many people in the race trying to get footing, and the media is trying to illuminate facts about all of them. As the field starts to winnow, you will see more and more scrutiny of what candidates say and do, and what they have done or said in the past. Hillary Clinton also has the option of challenging the statement, but strategically she needs to focus on the bigger picture and on selling herself to get the nomination. Should she find herself in a general election against Giuliani, her campaign will devote ample resources to challenging just these kinds of comments."

Because the "infamous liberal media" doesn't call him on his "misstatements". Repugs always get a free ride on their false accusations, and Rudy is one of them.

This is why politics is all about mud slinging think back to the last few elections.
