To answer your question no. It would cause more problems than it solves. Responsible breeders show their dogs and only breed when they have a specific plan to better the breed so we are not the problem and we are the only ones you would be hurting. The puppy millers and the back yard breeders who just throw together two dogs and pump out litter after litter are who cause the problem. Those are the people you need to target and until you can figure out how to do that leave those of us who are responsible breeders out of it.

No, as a breeder, and trainer, I can tell you that when one of my bitches has a litter, it is a long drawn out process of finding the right dog to stud to her so that my lines stay intact.

Once the breeding has taken place I inform my National breed club to let them know so as to let them inform probable pup owners that they have a list of that they can contact me, as well as my own wating list of probable owners.

The next step I go through is to screen probable owners, both verbaly, and a questionaire. Do they want a Show dog, or Pet quality dog. What will they be doing with the dog, do they live in a house or apartment. do they have children, a yard, what kind of exercise will the dog get, etc.

Then contracts are sent out to probable owners. Show quality dogs will always be co-owned with me, Pet quality pups will be released from the contract to their owners once spade or neutering is proven by their vet. as I don`t want anyone out there breeding my dogs without my consent.

I stay in constant contact with my clients, be it pet quality or Show. If I don`t hear from them I call. I ask for pictures, how the dog is doing etc.

The problem that exsists is from folks that like to call themselves breeders but don`t have a clue. How many folks hang a sign out at the end of their driveway advertising AKC pups, but when you ask them if the litter was registerd they look at you like you don`t know what your talking about. Backyard breeders, breeders of mixed breed dogs that want to reproduce because it was a good guard dog, heck, I can go on and on.

My personal beleif is that all breeders should be licensed or fined for not being licensed and producing pups.

It would be wonderful if those producing the pet overpopulation problem would cease breeding but the odds are they won't and the people who are responsible enough and knowledgeable enough to be breeding already rarely breed and don't really add to that issue anyway -- no laws against puppy millers, back yard greeders, or stupid, unfortunately :(

I think it would be an great idea except it would be hard to enforce. About the only ones that would suffer would be honest breeders. Back yard breeders and puppy mills etc. would probably do more business that ever.

How do you plan on explaining this to stray dogs???
