One month pregnant? Dangerous to my baby??
I just found out from my doc. that I am pregnant. I have been getting my nails done (acrylic) at the nail salon and I'm not sure if I should continue getting them done or not because I don't want to potentially harm the baby. My best friend continued to get hers done through her entire pregnancy...she says it's harmless. Anyone know the truth about this?
Thank you!

If you're just having acrylic nails put on, you're probably not exposed to enough of any hazardous materials to create any significant hazard to your pregnancy. Some of the chemicals involved can be absorbed through the skin, but you're not likely to be exposed to great enough amounts to pose a danger other than a possible allergic reaction and skin rash. Nor would the fumes be a problem if you were just visiting the shop as a customer. If you're applying nails all day as your job, your exposure is much greater, but even then the most likely problem is allergic reactions, which do force many cosmetologists to leave the industry. The few studies that have looked at pregnancy among cosmetologists have shown mixed results: One study suggested an increased risk for miscarriage among cosmetologists, but several other studies found no additional risk. It's not clear how to reconcile the differing results. The studies didn't differentiate between women who work with hair care products and those working with nail products, so even if there is a hazard for workers, it's not clear whether it's from hair care or from artificial nails work.

Well, I don't know if it can harm your unborn baby. But, acrylic nails do harbor a bacteria that can be deadly to newborns. The hospital I work at banned all employees from wearing acrylic nails if they have contact with patients because of this bacteria. This all came about because a newborn in another hospital nearby contracted this infection and died. The nurse that was taking care of this newborn was wearing acrylic nails. I don't know how common this is. I'm sure many women wear acrylic nails and have babies that are fine. I probably wouldn't take the chance though.

Hmmm...properly i will initiate by using asserting that i'm sorry you have had a nasty day. :( in my view this female is purely enjoying on her being pregnant. If I have been you i does no longer seek advice from this female with regard to the topics you're having along with her, somewhat i might seek advice from the managers and purely clarify your self and how you sense with regard to the region. If she isn't able to end the projects and responsibilities that are required of the activity then she needs a sparkling place, yet i'm effective that there is possibly a regulation coping with that. i will understand her no longer desirous back into touch with somebody else s actual fluids, no person DOES! and she or he additionally shouldn't could desire to handle people who could be violent. so some distance as lifting is going, whilst i grow to be pregnant my healthcare professional informed me that there are actually not any regulations on lifting till around 20 weeks. I paintings in homestead well being and handle a form clientele and the failings that I could desire to do are possibly resembling the failings which you would be able to desire to do. I worked till i grow to be 39 weeks pregnant and did all of the same issues I did formerly i grow to be pregnant (minus lifts after 20 weeks). i wish that this might all be resolved quickly. Oh and undergo in ideas that if she is performing this variety now, purely wait til she performs up the hormones factor and is a complete ***** to truthfully everyone, lol. solid luck!

Actually webmd just published an article of pregnancy dos and don'ts this week. They do not recommend getting your nails done, but it sounds like it's the continued exposure to the strong smells that can put your baby at risk, like if you worked there everyday. Feel free to check out the site, it lists common myths, exposes some for the myth they are and reveals that others may be true.
Congrats!

well I dont think its a problem. I know that dyeing your hair is a huge no no...I think I even read in my pregnancy book that getting a manicure is very relaxing for you during your pregnancy just as long as you are in a very open salon and everything is very clean. If you are that worried than you could google it or even just call your doctor...hes the one that would really 100% know if it is okay or not. good luck and congrats

You should run this question by your OB and see what he/she recommends. I have found that prenatal vitamins make my nails longer and stronger anyway so you may not have a need for fake ones! Good luck!

Star,
You should avoid any exposure to chemicals of any type while you are pregnant. The enormous rise in autistic children has been linked to air pollution and other chemical toxins that enter a woman's body during critical stages of development.
