Scarf for a 4 year-old?

I knit all the time, but I do things mostly for adults.

I don't have kids, never have had kids, and while my neices were young, I was in the USAF spending most of my time far from the girls, so Uncle Chris missed a lot of time when his girls were young. I have no idea how long to make a scarf for a 4 year-old girl.

I figure that 4 inches wide is good, but how long should I make it? No, I can't just see how tall she is, because #1, it's for some friends of mine who live in Germany now, #2, even if the child father or mother told me how tall she was, it wouldn't do me any good because I have zero fashion sense and wouldn't know how long to make it because I don't know what 4 year-old girls like for a scarf length, nor have any idea what is practical.

I would appreciate any ideas on how long to make it. The scarf is being made with size 8 needles, using Red Heart Supersaver yarn in the color pattern Ocean. I intend to make fringe 3-4 inches long.

Thanks!!!

5 or 6 inches would be good for a child's scarf.

the scarf should be about 54 inches should last the child a good while.

May I suggest that a scarf may not be the best thing you could knit for a 4 year old? Little ones, and I have one, can easily get a scarf caught in something, panic and choke, or can have someone grab it in play and choke.. I, personally, do not give these to a child under the age of 8, and even then, it depends on the child. You know, even little girls wear balaclavas, or turtle neck dickies to keep their necks warm, and I much prefer those for them. But if you're sure you want to knit them scarves, make them approximately as long as the child is tall (folded in half around the neck these should be just right). Put a button hole in the middle of it, too, and enclose a button to be sewn in her coat so that she can button the scarf to it so it doesn't get lost or forgotten when she takes it off.

If you nieces are into Harry Potter, they have an Harry Potter scarf that is quick to knit up and good for boys or girls. I'm not sure where to find it but if you do a search, it will pop up. Hope this helps.

A child's scarf would be maybe 58 inches before the fringe. You want her to be able to use it for a long time.

I made scarves for my nieces and made them long enough to reach their belly buttons on both sides (not including the fringe). 36 inches should be enough for a 4 year old. I wouldn't go higher than 40 inches.

Kacky gave you a good idea but if you want you could make it to last into grown up by adding possible 10 " and she could wrap it around her neck as a youngster. In my opinion 4" seems very narrow.

i would say you would want it to be 4- 4'5 feet if it were a smaller kid, i would say 2x their upper body length
